Wonder what really happens at the consulates? Find out in the Isaac Brock Society’s Consulate Report Directory, currently 279 pages of first-hand accounts of renunciation/relinquishment appointments, arranged by consulate location, along with further information and links to the required Dept of State forms and the Dept of State manuals used by the consulates in processing CLN applications, with an appendix containing a timeline chart (booking-meeting-CLN) as reported by consulate location.
The Directory is updated as consulate visit stories are posted on the website.
You can post here or elsewhere on the site (we’ll keep an eye out for them). Some comments may be excerpted or condensed slightly in the consulate reports. The original posts and comments remain on their threads are not edited.
Thanks to everyone for sharing your experiences…and keep ’em coming! It’s a new experience for everyone and your information is really helpful.

To Book an Appointment and/or Request Information from your Local Consulate:
This post by Eric, Almost No US Citizenship Renunciation Appointments Left During 2016 in Dublin, contains a chart of links to the consulates’ website pages on renunciation/relinquishment, for info on booking appointments and/or requesting information at your location. (The title highlights Dublin, but the charts, article and discussion cover consulates around the world.)

@ Pacifica777, Tiger, Medea Fleecestealer
Thank you for the congrats and yes it sure will be a special Canada day with all the freedom we are expected to have in this country.
At last time for me to celebrate. Canada Post delivered my long awaited CLN today.
A brief timeline – my first appointment with the Vancouver consulate – September, 2012. My 2nd appointment with the consulate – April, 2013 (with the intervention of Sylvia Johnson, Consul General for Canada). CLN received – June 24, 2013. Date of Expatriation – October, 1972.
7 months is an absolutely ridiculous amount of time between 1st and 2nd interviews.
@Tiger,
Super-Congratulations on this happy day!!!
That was dreadful that Vancouver requires 2 meetings (to get a CLN for a 40+ year old relinquishment, a document we never heard of 40 years ago and only need now because their country changed the rules of the game). And, on top of meeting #2 being completely unnecessary, that they drag out so much time between the two meetings (so glad Ms. Johnson was of assistance).
So, I am just so super happy to read this!!! You have official proof that you are who you always were! The nightmare is over! Life is back — life is real again!!!
Apparently Sylvia Johnson was supposed to get all US Consulates in Canada to go to a single appointment renunciation procedure (see link below). Does anyone know if this is indeed now the case for Vancouver?
Also, I just checked the Vancouver Consulate and I see no available appointments for June or July for “notarial and other services” (apparently August is not yet bookable). Is making a “notarial and other services” online appointment the correct way to book a renunciation appointment in Vancouver, or is there a more direct way?

@Tiger:
@tdott,
We don’t have any evidence of Vancouver streamlining their procedure to coincide with other US consulates in Canada.
Sylvia Johnson listened and communicated with us (when the US Ambassador to Canada residing at the Ottawa Embassy did not) in making the procedure more efficient and the same experience for anyone relinquishing or renouncing in Canada. The US Consulate in Vancouver seems to prefer to play by their own rules instead of making the processes of renunciation and claiming relinquishment of US citizenship an efficient and respectful process for US Persons in Canada who have made up their minds to end the absurd relationship. There are no words for Tiger’s unneeded stressful experience for relinquishment at the Vancouver US Consulate. Ms. Johnson listened and was able to avoid an even longer wait for Tiger. In fact, she is communicating and trying to get an answer for me (and others) right now on another important question. Sylvia D. Johnson is to those hindering the process for renunciants and relinquishers at the Vancouver consulate what Calgary’s Mayor Naheed Nenshi is to many other non-communicating heads of state (Ten Reasons Calgarians love Nenshi (especially his leadership right now)).
Try Calgary for your relinquishment and renunciation needs (which no one should have to do because of the added travel expense) — they will probably serve you better even as they’re helping their neighbours clean up from flooding.
@all
Thank you so much for sharing in my joy. And I refuse to allow the fact that they found it necessary to include a Form 8854 in with my package to intimidate me. Em, I like your suggestion – I will file it the same place they filed your 407!!!
@ tdott,
Listen to what Calgary has said. If I were booking an appointment today to file for a CLN, for either relinquishment or renunciation, I would book at the Calgary consulate. I have recently advised two retired UBC prof’s, who became Canadians many years ago, to do just that. As you have already noticed, Vancouver is showing no appointments in June and July and their calendar is not even open beyond that. Tis is the only way to get an appointment in Vancouver is to do it online. Then there is the fact they require 2 appointments – Calgary and other consulates only one appointment. If I had not been fortunate enough to have Sylvia Johnson intervene on my behalf, my second appointment was booked for OCTOBER 2013. Why put yourself through that agony.
@tiger
Congratulations. No one deserves that piece of paper more than you, and what Vancouver put you through to get it is outrageous.
Sending this from Maui — two uneventful US border crossings in the last week, no questions asked of my traitorous wife. She had the CLN with her, it was never mentioned — I guess because it’s already on file and what would be the point?
Back to the surf.
@ Arrow
Yes indeed, Tiger’s CLN is well deserved and so is your vacation respite with your thankfully unquestioned CLNed wife. Soak up those Vit D’s in Hawaii and come back feeling rested and well.
WOW! Happy for you Tiger. What a freaking relief it must be!.
Congrats to you Tiger! It’s been a long time coming, but at last you’re free. Enjoy.
@ Tiger
Congratulations on this special day for you especially after what you’ve been through.
@Tiger
I’m so relieved for you. That CLN was hard won, even more so than most. And just in time for Canada day – go celebrate!
@Tiger,
I came on to post about my son’s renunciation today and am overjoyed to hear your news! Congrats and so happy your ordeal is finished. I still can’t believe what you had to go through.
My son came from Ottawa for an appointment today in Toronto. I dropped him off and went to park. He was not outside by the time I came back and there were very few visa applicants outside. Apparently, they would not let him inside the building right away as he was “too early.”
I expected it would be at least 45 minutes after the scheduled time but out he came before 3 pm. He said there were only 2-3 other people in the waiting room. I asked him if he heard anything that indicated anyone else was there for renouncing/relinquishing but he didn’t think so (and he isn’t up on all of our buzz words). He had everything filled out, which seemed to surprise the consul. He waited about 15 minutes, they came back with everything prepared, he said the oath, paid and came out. No hassle or questions. CLN in 3-4 months. Super easy. One appointment.
So now, we are a CDN-only family!
Congratulations to your son, too, nobledreamer. I’m glad he had such an easy appointment — what a contrast to what Tiger had to go through.
I, too, say that mine is a CDN-only family and will not register my son with the US.
@nobledreamer,
Thanks for your support in my long quest for the CLN. And congratulations to your son.
As far as the Vancouver consulate, I had my first appt March 6 and the second appt is on Sept 6. At first they said the second would be in 2014 but they increased the number of second appts. I agree with other posts that I have already made up my mind before the first appt, and that only one appt is enough. If anything, I have become even more disenchanted with being a US Citizen since the first appt. Is it even possible to book a first appt in Vancouver now?
I now have a reason to celebrate the 4th of July as it will be my very own personal independence day forever more since my CLN arrived today. The irony is just delicious. It was approved in DC on 26 Jun. Exactly one month from appointment to receipt of CLN.
Ha, Edelweiss, ironic indeed and congratulations! Really quick turnaround too. Have a very happy 4th of July.
Congratulations Edelweiss! What a perfect date for the arrival of the proof of your escape from those grasping hands reaching out from the land of Mordor. What a quick turn around too — one month! I hope you will be summarizing your experience for others who are about to follow you to their own independence days. 🙂
@Edelweiss,
Congratulations. To receive it on July 4th gives new meaning to the word independence.
Thanks all.
@Em, the report I posted on my embassy visit has been incorporated into the Consulate Report Directory pdf which just needs to be updated for the CLN receipt date.
Congratulations, Edelweiss!
Glad to hear you got your CLN, and that you didn’t have a long wait. Rather appropriate to receive it on “Independence” Day!
I’ll add that you received it to the Directory, and thanks again for sharing your consulate report story.
Just curious, when you enter the US with your Canadian passport (showing US birthplace) and your CLN, do you have to travel with the original or can you make a copy for traveling ?
WhatAmI,
No, don’t travel with the original. Keep the original CLN in a safe place (how would you like to lose it and have to get a replacement true original from the US?).
The information will be on the US computer system at the border. Do travel with a copy of your CLN to be safe and if there are problems. Hopefully there won’t be.
