The Burrard Street Journal is reporting that
DONALD J. Trump believes the U.S. “should never have allowed” Canada to gain independence. The republican candidate for president freely admits to being “a little rusty” on Canadian history, but feels confident that the United States owned Canada “at some point”, and claims giving it back was a “major mistake”.
The former reality tv star was responding to a question about Puerto Rico possibly becoming the 51st of the United States, when he made the statement. “It used to be 51 you know, when we had Canada,” Trump said, pointing to an American flag, “Or 52 if you count Mexico which I never will, no matter how much they beg.”
The interviewer Brian Kilmeade, seemed unmoved by Trump’s remark and asked him to explain his understanding of Canadian/American history, as the Fox host began scribbling notes:
“I personally think it was the biggest mistake in American history, giving Canada back. Look at that place now, it’s falling to pieces. It’s overrun by godless, gunless hippies and it’s such a shame to see.”
As the host nodded along, Trump explained that America got a “terrible deal” with Canada who “stole” the land over a thousand years ago “or something like that”.
“It was a truly awful deal. Canada gets Toronto and Vancouver, which has the hottest women, and what did we get? Alaska? The Florida of Canada? Such a terrible deal.”
“Well what are you going to do if elected?” Kilmeade asked. “Forcefully take Canada and claim it as part of America?”
“I think that’s gotta be an option,” Trump responded. “You know, they’ve got a lot of oil up there, a lot.”
“I’m not sure there is any evidence to support this theory, Donald,” Kilmeade intervened. “I mean wasn’t Canada founded by Britain and France who invaded–” “No, are you kidding me?” Trump interrupted. “You think that either of those guys know the first thing about war? No Canada has belonged to America since Jesus’ time, and that’s a fact.”
Shortly after the controversial interview, Trump reiterated his stance towards Canada with a tweet that was deleted 20 minutes later, not before being retweeted over 6,000 times.
What is the vice-president of Republicans Overseas doing saying Trump is losing it?
I, as well as many others, sincerely appreciate everything you have been doing to help expats.
I fully back the GOP platform with regards to expats. It is fair and correct, which is a refreshing change.
But I am concerned about Trump’s campaign over the past few days. CNN International has their pro-Hillary propaganda machine kicked into overdrive. I lost respect for almost every single CNN staff member who calls him/herself a journalist, with the exceptions of Wolf Blitzer and Arwa Damon. The rest are openly pro-Hillary.
I don’t care about Trump’s spat with Khan, a Democrat operative that exploited his son’s death to score points for his party. Screw him.
However, I am very concerned with Trump’s spat with Paul Ryan, and by default, Reince Priebus. This is not good. Reince Priebus has been very supportive of expats. And I believe Ryan has been as well.
As it stands now, Hillary only needs to duck and cover until November and she will win because the Reps are rapidly cannibalizing each other into non-existence.
If this happens, CBT and FATCA will be carved in stone and the senseless wars sponsored by the war-making industry will continue.
That’s the way it looks from here.
Re: “When a professional lobbyist comes to Brock to recommend we a) hire a lobbyist and b) vote for his candidate, is it OK if I apply Petros Principle 11 (cynicism)?” Sure! And when a litigator tells you: “You have a great case – you should sue!”, should the same principle apply? Of course. It doesn’t mean either is wrong, though.
The issue is when cynicism (on which I take a back seat to no one) becomes an impediment to taking opportunities because “once burned, twice shy” you understandably don’t want to be taken in. That’s what calls for discernment.
Maybe Trump could be replaced? By somebody sane? I cannot vote anymore- but if I could- I just could never ever vote for a madman like Trump. Just can`t.
With regards to the 15% Foreigner Tax on purchased homes, the Vancouver Market is NOT a free for all. It’s just that mind-set that has driven prices up to the point where CANADIANS (both PR and citizen) can’t buy a home any-more. It’s foreign speculators that we’re trying to drive out of the Metro Vancouver area, not those who intend on legitimately setting down roots. And those who are of American descent who plan to set down roots, best keep renting until such time as they get their PR through and not have to deal with the 15% tax.
My family will NEVER have the money to buy a home in the city in which my kids were born because of the fact that foreign speculation has driven prices up to the point where we can’t afford it. If you want land…then get your Permanent Residency. Plain and simple.
…when we’re assailed with FATCA from one end and the “trickle-down” from speculation prices (the more a mortgage costs; the more the rents go up) Pretty soon it’s going to be impossible to rent in the Lower Mainland.
My wife and I are wondering if we’re ever going to be able to be able to stop “renting” and buy a home. But we know that is a pipe-dream in this speculation-driven housing market. And pretty soon, with rents reaching nearly $2,500 a month; there is no bloody way that my wife, my kids and I can stay in the Lower Mainland.
Foreigners do NOT have the right to come in and speculate those who live and pay taxes here in Canada out of their homes.
This combined with FATCA directed at my wife’s minimal income with justifications of the “law is the law” and to “pay your fair share” has fine-tuned my rage to the hair-trigger point. So don’t make it out to be a bias situation. Fair for foreigners (origin-bias) means that Canadians lose out on their homes and have to move to places like the Interior (shades of the past injustices).
FATCA wants me to pay for “homelanders” toys.
The 15% Foreigner tax tells FOREIGNERS to get the hell out so that Canadians can have the expectation of being able to buy homes – where is the injustice in that?
“https://vancouver.craigslist.ca/rds/apa/5716835898.html” <— For rent in Surrey. Tim, you think it's fair that renters are going to have to earn at minimum $50,000 to RENT…in SURREY!? Or do you think that Vancouver and the Lower Mainland SHOULD be a "free for all" for foreign investors? You're damned fucking right I'm pissed off.
The Christie Clark government have been informed that the 15% tax on foreigners purchasing real estate in BC goes against the NAFTA agreement and will be taken to court if they do not rescind it.
Further, a lawsuit is being launched based on the Charter of Rights and Freedoms against the tax.
Ontario and othe provinces do not have such a tax so folks will flock to those provinces leaving the BC Real Estate market for good.
Already deals have falled through because of it and the market has come to a screeching halt.
Meanwhile Ontario Real Estate has just kicked into overdrive.
When Donald Trump say he is going to renegotiate NAFTA and TPP he means it and believe me it is a good thing if he does so.
So many have NO idea what is in store if they are not dealt with immediately.
