The Member of Parliament for Timmins/James Bay reveals some of the unethical aspects of FATCA legislation in the omnibus budget bill. He misses a number of points regarding native treaty rights, French language rights, Article 8 and 15 Charter violations, and extraordinary rendition of financial information to the United States. But all in all it is not a bad speech. The criticism of FATCA begins at 2:00 (mins):
“Citizenship is something which is sacred.” Indeed.
The Potemkin Parliament — so true, Mr. Angus, so true!
@ Furious AC
It is just as you described and I’ll bet the truth behind 911 didn’t get by you either. As in all things now I turn 180 degrees from the “official story” to search for the real deal — including WW2 (it was the victors who wrote that history but victors lie to hide their own criminality). Enough said. Back to fighting FATCA.
I really don’t see why green carders should be reassured with the wording of the IGA. It’s all too wink-wink for me. Like Calgary411, I crave certainty. Like everything government does, its true destination lies hidden in the mists of the future. What I do know for certain is that the USG made demands, Canada caved. What’s to stop the USG for making further demands now that they know Canada will cave again? CBT and FATCA are WRONG and only their total anhilation will bring me comfort. Until then, I remain watchful and wary. It’s probably unrealistic to hope that sanity will prevail but to accept the insanity would destroy my soul.
@ don…..”However a big fund will be needed to lobby MPs”…. yes and I am sure that I will be contributing to an “MP3 ” challenge fund if GWEvil and the rest of the magical folks at IbS organise this…. I only wish we had UK equivalents of all the big IBS guns and of the Canada MPs who are now waking up and smelling the coffee…wait its not coffee its FATCA Obama KOOLAID… I love the UK (having spent 30 years here and chosen it as my country for life when i expatriated) but man, I do fume when the Govt in london does its poodle supine acts………..!!!!!!! long live canadian exceptionalism!!!
@ Petros (RE Canadians will be spending…)
While likely confusing to a newbie, I think this is VERY WELL SAID (and sadly true)
@Cheersbigears
You can stop believing in fairy tales now. The US economy is getting better. So btw is Greece.
So thats not going to be the way out of this.

Superb speech by Charlie. My favourite bit is at the very end, in his response to Elizabeth May’s question. Sad, pathetic even, but oh so true. The Harper Cons have degraded and debased Parliament, democracy, and the true principles of conservatism not only with FATCA but with all aspects of their omnibus “budget bills.” This must be stopped in the next election. Vote ABC. Vote strategically to defeat this government.
Bruce Cockburn wrote a song about the IMF (Call It Democracy) — awesome! For Charlie Angus, Schubert and me (because I’d never heard this song before):
