Canada Revenue Agency shuts online service to guard against Heartbleed bug
TU THANH HA, BILL CURRY And ADRIAN MORROW
MY COMMENT……I HOPE THIS AFFECTS THE IRS AND THEY HAVE TO CLOSE DOWN PERMANENTLY.
AT LEAST WE HAVE THE HACKING GROUP ANONYMOUS TRYING TO BRING THIS EVIL SYSTEM TO ITS KNEES
OMG Chears…. is anything safe with our government’s computers? Yikes! Just want to say a HUGE thank you to everyone involved with the efforts and timeless work for this Charter challenge. This does not go unnoticed to our family and I am sure with many many other families here in Canada. Again, thank you from all of us…..
This is the link for CBE’s comment:

I don’t think we should be doing whole article quotes without permission. Certainly we should provide a link to the original. Partial quotes plus a link would probably be more appropriate.
BACK ON TOPIC:
Well done Tricia, Stephen and Lynne! What an efficient and truly commendable effort. I’m looking forward to the next challenge.
On topic, a big thanks to all, including GwEvil too.

Vote #99 on April 8th, 2014

Vote topic: That the Bill be now read a second time and referred to the Standing Committee on Finance.
See context in the Debates.
Result:
YES 149 (ALL MPs WHO VOTED “YES” ARE CONSERVATIVE — No NO’s BY CONSERVATIVES)
No 125 (MPs WHO VOTED “NO”: GREEN, LIBERAL, BLOC, NDP)
Judge for yourself; did any CONSERVATIVE MP vote with their own conscious and moral conviction or was it THE PARTY VOTE? Are you sure that your Conservative MP completely understood what they were voting for?
Thank you to the Green, Liberal, Bloc, NDP MPs for standing up for democracy and a SOVEREIGN Canada..
Thank all of you involved in creating the Charter website and banking. I was a very successful en devour.
@Calgary411
My MP Charlie Angus said the NDP are voting down C-31
I have Charlies speech on Youtube
Thank you to everyone who organized and contributed to the fund.
@Northernstar: Excellent clip– his speech hits a home run. This is one to forward to friends, politicians, and press.
You’re lucky,
Calgary411northernstar, Charlie Angus rocks, whereas my MP lies!Outraged Canadian and I have decided that the share of the funds allocated to Maple Sandbox will be held and will be contributed to the next step of the Charter Challenge or will be used for another purpose to fight this monster.
Donating to this was the best thing I could have done for my physical health.
Since this attack on expats from the homeland began, I have developed hypertension and panic attacks all requiring medication.
On a recent trip to the homeland where I simply had to go as I did not want to go, the meds simply failed to control both conditions. Uncontrolled hypertension and uncontrolled panic attacks is what happened.
Anyways, the couple days surrounding when I posted a contribution due north, my blood pressure dropped and I did not have a single panic attack.
Its time to move on to the next step.
@George,
I’m sorry to hear you are suffering panic attacks and hypertension! I think I might have a panic attack as well if I had to travel to the USA.
Try not to worry too much. We will beat this thing here in Canada!
@Canadian Cop,
If you are still reading, I sent a copy of your letter to your MP, to Charlie Angus a few days ago. You are probably the person born in 1958 that Angus refers to in his speech. Thanks so much for sharing that letter with us here at Brock. It has been put to good use!
if anyone needs meds to control traumatic stress please get your doctor to write a letter explaining why you need them so we can launch a class action suit that includes how our government has ruined the lives of Canadians. Be careful with benzos….DO NOT USE THEM CONTINUOUSLY FOR MORE THAN 2 WEEKS……THE STUFF IS POISON AND WORSE THAN HEROIN TO GET OFF OF.
Why don’t we have a lawyer doing a class action NOW? Blaze. I’m sick of seeing no action by Arvay or any other lawyers. People are being damaged NOW. Damage has been done to Canadians. I’m tired of waiting for ARVAY… He has not posted a single comment here to help people. I don’t think he cares one hoot about the damage done.
CALLING ALL CONSTITUTIONAL LAWYERS OUT THERE. WE NEED VOLUNTEERS NOW NOW NOW TO LAUNCH DOZENS OF SIMILAR LAWSUITS OF EVERY VARIETY AND TO OBTAIN INJUNCTIONS TO PREVENT THE CRA FROM ACTING AS THE ARM OF THE NAZI IRS. PLEASE STEP FORWARD.
I don’t know who decided on just Arvay but so far I see nothing and I don’t like it
I was hospitalized today for a hypertensive episode and associated anxiety. Fuck, Mr Arvay, get off your ass and come here and talk to us. We are paying your fucking bill. Act like you care about your clients and at least show your face here. Are you just waiting for the inevitable suicides?
@All, for anyone who is interested, Charlie Angus wrote several books, one titled ‘Unlikely Radicals – the story of the Adams Mine Dump War’ which apparently is what inspired him to enter politics. I accidentally found out about Angus and his ‘radical’ nature when I happened to tune into a radio channel where he was being interviewed about a week ago. He described the book as somewhat of a handbook for average Canadians trying to fight government and corporations. Here is the link to his book that Angus emailed me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=133R4jUiXQ4
@chearsbigears
Please allow Mr Arvay do what he’s paid to do. Unlike conspiracy theorists, he won’t come to a conclusion then look for evidence to support it.
Thank you all for organizing and managing the CCCF!
You personify true patriotism, selfless public service, and moral leadership.
The fact that the goal was reached in several days sends a strong message. This was accomplished by a handful of volunteers, with a simple but effective website, and only social media to spread the word; no call centres, no TV ads, no press coverage, no fancy databases. Politicians everywhere should take note.
@WhiteKat, I exercise a lot and that has been helping. My GP explains that the dosages he is prescribing is to take the edge off of both conditions. But I should have had a whole new prescription regimen for the last trip, how was I to know or even explain it to a GP.
My GP thinks its so wonderful my kids are “dual.” Then I tell me kids never ever discuss that part of themselves as it will be used against them.
But sitting at the airport for my return flight home I took my BP and the reading was not just normal but on the lower side of the healthy normal. On the plane, I had a single glass of wine and then slept like a baby. Went through the resident line with absolute glee, I was almost afraid the immigration person was going to think I was loaded from the plane. 🙂
Having made a few trips back and most recently, I am really looking at the States through a different lense. The expression as being a stranger in a strange land comes to mind.
I have shared my personal situation privately with a few on these boards and the attack from the homeland of being an ex-patriot has been hitting my core. I do not know what it is like to go through a marital divorce, maybe this is like it, I do not know.
Personally, I think I need to see a victory against this monstrosity so I can then close that chapter in my life.
I was just thinking, BC Doc would find this “amusing” in the sense that misery loves company.
George to GP: “Doc, in a couple weeks I am going to America. The panic attacks are increasing and my home BP readings are going up.”
GP to George: “Don’t worry, you will have sunshine, warm weather and blue skies where you are going. It will do you a world of good, enjoy yourself I wish I could go to America, I would live there if I could, if you can extend your trip do it.”
George takes the bus home thinking, “I would be far happier traveling in two weeks to Cuba and only flying over the US.”
Sir Isaac Brock developed the winning strategy which prevented an American occupation of what was to become the nation of Canada. His spirit is deeply disturbed that 200 years after the victory of the War of 1812, Canadian politicians have turned that victory into defeat by capitulating to the US law called FATCA, thus assuring US financial hegemony in Canada. I believe that if Sir Isaac Brock were here today he would want to test the mettle of our current politicians and administer the following test:
THE SIR ISAAC BROCK TEST (12 QUESTIONS):
#1 Do you consider a Canadian citizen who was born in the USA to be:
a) a Canadian with a US birthplace OR
b) an American who lives in Canada?
(These would include “Border Babies”, some of whom only spent a few days in the USA before their parents brought them back to Canada.)
#2 Do you consider a Canadian citizen who has never been a US citizen but lived for a period of time in the USA to be:
a) a Canadian who once lived in the USA OR
b) a “US person” who lives in Canada?
(These would include Canadians who many years ago obtained a US green card and upon their return to Canada were told their green cards had expired [i.e. were now null and void] but were not informed there was a formal exit procedure from the US tax regime.)
#3 Would you designate the bank accounts held in Canada by Canadian citizens/residents who the USA considers to be “US persons” to be:
a) normal local Canadian accounts OR
b) suspicious “offshore” American accounts?
(These account holders would have worked in Canada, invested in Canada, saved for their retirement in Canada and paid all of their Canadian taxes.)
#4 Do you believe a dual Canadian-American citizen living in Canada can be:
a) only a Canadian according to the Master Nationality Rule OR
b) also an American and therefore subject to the laws of the USA?
(The Master Nationality Rule is listed under Article 4 of The Hague Convention. It essentially states that when a citizen is living in the country of one of his two or more nationalities, that country has the right to treat that person as if he/she were solely a citizen or national of that country.)
#5 Do you believe that might does NOT make right?
a) YES
b) NO
(When Eritrea tried to collect its “diaspora tax” Canada condemned this little nation. When the mighty USA imposed its “draconian diaspora tax” Canada assisted it by first condoning US citizenship-based taxation (CBT) which is NOT the international norm and then agreeing to further assist the USA by signing a FATCA (IGA) to enforce its extraterritorial tax regime.)
#6 Do you completely support the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms?
a) YES
b) NO
(The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms is supposed to protect Canadian citizens and residents from unlawful search and seizure and to ensure that they are not discriminated against due to their national origins.)
#7 Do you believe that it is NOT appropriate for Canadian financial institutions to assist the IRS in its search for Canadian residents with US indicia?
a) YES
b) NO
(The USA is allegedly looking for US “tax cheats” but FATCA casts a vast dragnet which will ensnare honest Canadians who have lived their lives in Canada, obeying all of Canada’s laws.)
#8 Is your primary concern to:
a) uphold Canadian charter rights and Canadian privacy laws OR
b) promote and enable US laws in Canada?
(If the US law FATCA is adopted by Canada then Peter Hogg, a leading Canadian constitutional lawyer, believes it could be subject to a charter challenge. FATCA is unarguably a breach of the privacy of a specific group of Canadian citizens/residents and that makes it discriminatory.)
#9 Do you know that true reciprocal exchange of information with the USA is an empty promise designed to give a false air of legitimacy to FATCA IGAs?
a) YES
b) NO
(The USA has stated it will “pursue legislation to provide reciprocity” but the US congress is not likely ever going to pass legislation which will burden the US financial industry in any manner or risk capital flight out of the USA. Furthermore, true reciprocal information is not useful to Canada because Canada uses residence-based taxation which does not impose taxes on Canadians who live in the USA.)
#10 Do you believe that Canada as a sovereign country should not acquiesce to the demands of a foreign nation, even if that nation is as powerful as the USA?
a) YES
b) NO
(The FATCA IGA appears to give the Canadian financial institutions a reprieve from the extortion threat of 30% withholding penalties but it provides no relief to individuals who are threatened by the draconian penalties the IRS has attached to its extraterritorial tax system.)
#11 Have you considered that after FATCA implementation in Canada there could be a legal and political backlash from Canadians who are neither US citizens nor “US persons”?
a) YES
b) NO
(These would be Canadian-only spouses, children or business associates whose bank accounts are shared with US citizens or “US persons” thus making their accounts subject to FATCA reporting too.)
#12 What did you do when FACTA IGA enabling legislation came up for a vote in Parliament?
a) VOTED NAY and thereby took a stand for Canadian sovereignty, upheld the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and respected the privacy rights of all Canadian citizens and residents.
b) VOTED YEA and thereby demonstrated that your primary concern is to protect Canadian financial institutions and not individuals.
(The Canadian financial institutions had a prominent place at the table when the Canadian government was negotiating its capitulation to the US FATCA law, whereas individuals who would be adversely affected by FATCA were not even invited into the room.)
Score10 points for selecting a) and 0 points for selecting b) after each question. The only PASS score for this quiz is 120. Anything less is a FAIL.
After the obviously non-free vote in parliament today on Bill C-31 I am arbitrarily assigning a FAIL to all Conservatives members and a PASS to all opposition members. They may not have been specifically basing their votes on FATCA but I’m Sir Isaac Brock’s assigned scorekeeper and my judgment on this is FINAL.
BUBBLEBUSTIN
NO!
I have nothing to go on. He’s had ENOUGH time
Peoples lives are at stake and mental and physical health too.
He’s a malingerer in my opinion. Bad choice of lawyers. There is nothing for him to do Bubblebustin. We don’t need an opinion. We have an opinion already, a unanimous opinion that this IGA violates out rights.
Joe needs to file a challenge NOW and worry about collecting evidence as we go. We cannot lose anyway. He’s not going to come out and say we have no standing so he should just go ahead. If he can’t then this fucked up country isn’t worth pissing on. I don’t like this waiting, it isn’t necessary. Lawyers are not to be trusted. Whoever hired this guy needs to get on his case seriously or find someone who is capable and willing to jump right into this with both feet. So far has has wasted time and done nothing. I don’t like him.
Love Charley Angus!
@Em,
Like I said earlier, Canadian Cop’s letter to his MP has gone to good use.
Bravo, Em!
My apologies for straying off this topic but I think that it is absolutely deplorable that the US is giving people health problems.
George, I hope that your health issues have improved and are stable. You may already be fully aware of these measures but the following can be very helpful in dealing with anxiety & hypertension:
– try to eat a healthy diet (low in sodium & rich in potassium help to lower blood pressure) – lots of fruits and vegetables and fibre, limit saturated fat & sugar, limit alcohol to no more than 1-2 drinks/day
– exercise as much as possible (within the limits of what your doctor feels is safe for you) – swim, walk, bike etc., whatever works for you
– get proper sleep (at times easier said than done)
– immerse yourself in leisure activities and hobbies that you enjoy – they will take your mind off FATCA
– laugh as much as possible – Mr. Richardson had us laughing at the info. session that I attended and strongly advised that at times we all just have to laugh about it
“nothing tests a marriage like being married to a US citizen!”
“do you know what they call the non-US person? the ALIEN!” (emphasis added as if non-US people are from outer space!)
I have moments of anxiety & fear over this – they come & go, but my biggest problem has been trying to not let the anger get the best of me. We must keep a positive attitude that we will all beat this.
@ChearsBigEars,
There’s nothing you personally can do to speed things up with Mr. Arvay, but don’t let that bother you so much. The Charter Challenge is key, but not the only weapon of battle we have at our disposal. Leave that aside for now, and focus on other things you might be able to do if you really, really need to do something. And I think I get that feeling of really really needing to do SOMETHING.
Think about how you might occupy your frustrations with FATCA in other ways. Be creative. Start your own ball rolling in some small way. Things often have an amazing way to snowball when the cause is worthy. Killing FATCA from whatever angle, and restoring democracy in Canada are both worthy causes. You might be surprised what you can accomplish all by yourself by pushing a little rock here or there!
