Deb says:
…while I wanted to actually mention Harper and the Conservatives, I agree with Chears that that would probably be hard to get submitted.
So I made the ad as generic as I could while still getting the gist. At least I hope so.
The layout is like the one Chears ran and is intended as a starting point. Input from everyone is welcome and appreciated.
There is other advertisement discussion at http://isaacbrocksociety.ca/2014/03/28/breaking-news-tories-hide-fatca-law-in-budget-act/comment-page-2/#comment-1318170.
(Note:Β I’m just putting this in one place in case people want to discuss options of what they’d like to do.Β I am not the coordinator for this effort, just the poster.)

Original ad from Chears:

Great Kijiji ad – this should be encouraged for all Canadian FATCA meetings.
Maybe we could put one in Toronto areas Kijiji & Craig’s lists as a plug for the ACA May 2 CBT/RBT presentation in Toronto too
nervousinvstor,
I’ll send your pdf shortly : )
Chears,
You always speak your mind, so I’ll give it a go…
I offered my ad as a possibility ONLY because there was no way I wanted to contribute to the cost of an ad that used a cartoon font and had a colour pallet of red, white and blue. I’m glad I’ve inspired you to recreate an ad “that cannot be improved upon”.
However, my HONEST gut reaction to your ad – is that you are from the compliance industry. In fact, you could insert a picture of Mr. Mahany where Isaac is. Isaac, by the way, should be facing into the ad. Right now it looks like he’s ignoring you (one wonders why?). Oh, and law, financial, information, sent and bank do not require capitalization.
We’ve obviously presented two very different ways to achieve the same goal and although your hubristic attitude makes sure we’ll never work together – ever, I sincerely hope our work will help the cause. Thank you for your effort.
All,
I’ll change American Law to US Law.
@Deb. Thank you. Looking forward to receiving it.
LM and others,
The kijiji ad was all the work of GwEvil (of Toronto). She was the source for a lot of previous collaboration and work: http://isaacbrocksociety.ca/2013/12/20/fatca-handouts-available-for-printing/. I think GwEvil is providing the same for all of the information sessions.
Hi Polly and all
A new and final version of mine will be posted with your suggestion added at the top of the ad. No m ore changes on this one for next Thursday’s weekend edition.
I missed one deadline for this already so this will be the final one.
I have 250.00 from donors already and need about 400.00 now in total (150.00 more) for the added rider at the top. People don’t realize the cost of space even in a small newspaper. SO PLEASE DONATE SOMETHING FOLKS. THE PHONE NUMBER FOR THE PAPER IS DOWN THREAD. Closed on Sunday though so call Monday and ask for Bob.
I didn’t want black and white because color is 10 times more effective.
Another angle may be how being classed as a ‘US Person’ leaves you open to abuse from others. If someone knows you’re a ‘US Person’ and you fall out with them, they could report you to the IRS. What’s stopping the IRS setting up an ‘Report a US Person’ hotline?
Nothing once they have the data.
One of the slogans mentioned by Whitecat resonated with me, so I’ll throw one more version out there for comment. I do think the “classified’ FATCA logo is excellent.
U.S.A. ready to invade Canada – July 1st!

“Isaac, by the way, should be facing into the ad.”
Yes, I noticed that too. I don’t actually think, as much as I adore the man, that Sir Isaac Brock needs to be our logo. I believe it was GwEvil who came up with a beauty for the C3f site — simple, eye-catching and doesn’t require many ink colours. (Our local newspaper charges by the colour but gave me my second colour free last time.) Hope you’re not getting too discouraged by all the Brock chatter. If I place another local ad I’ll be using your version because I can do a decent facsimile using photoshop — as long as you don’t mind, that is.
This is an appeal to some rich millionaires amongst our ranks in Canada to come forward to blitz the country with ads telling Canadians what their Government has done to our rights and freedoms.
C’mon I know you’re out there. Don’t be selfish, help the country, yourself and your future
@all,
If nothing else, a marketing strategy needs to be polished and cohesive. At the moment, ours is not.
We need to be consistent with our colour choices, fonts and style whatever they end up being.
Can we please take a moment to decide on that. How do we want to look to the world we are trying to speak to? I have thick skin, and like I said, I aim to please. So whatever style is chosen. Fine.
@Chears,
I am not trying to be difficult or confrontational when I say this, but your ‘this is going to happen whether you like it or not’ attitude is well, disturbing. Can you really not see the hypocrisy?
@Em,
Please do. I’m glad you think it will help. : )
@ChearsBigEars
You make some good points about truth in advertising. This is a propaganda war, and the other side does not fight fair with FATCA truth, so you can (mis) characterize anyway you want ( or emphasize the point you want to make at the expense of other more complete descriptions). It is about getting attention and stirring outrage/action, and if you are not totally and completely accurate is not that important (although @Wren it pains me to say that). That is how political advertising works in America, it is to get the disconnected electorate engaged, and you have a lot of folks that still have just a FWhat? response to FATCA.
BTW, I too think that the “classified” stamp looks a bit messy even on my screen, so in a newspaper, it might not work, even though I understand the attempt. But if you go that route, Top Secret is another stamp you could use.
Anyway, You have enough ideas being batted around without my opinion or thoughts for additions this morning from NZ, but anything that ties FATCA to NSA surveillance in the minds of the causal reader, can’t hurt! π
@Deb Congratulations on getting this discussion started, although it is very hard to design an ad by committee via a blog posting. The camel comes to mind.
The Harper government surrendered to the USA roughly 200 years after the War of 1812. Sadly, Sir Isaac Brock is probably facing down now, after much grave spinning and the arrival of Harper’s omnibus.
To get the most bang for your buck, identify common publishers for these papers and go to them in one hit all together. You may get a discount if you’re going to do several publishers at once from the same media company. This is what advertising agencies when putting together nationwide campaigns.
The final version was not posted. Calgary 411 ?
Who is paying Don?
Final from Chears, with his note:
@ ChearsBigEars
I guess since Brock isn’t an actual organization it can’t get sued for that. I got away with saying, “U.S.A. to Invade Canada — AGAIN!” … so far.
How about at the top… “THIS WILL COST ALL CANADIANS” ?? Just a thought….
I wonder, once these ads are in place, we would need some kind of “first page” sort of tab on this site? Most on here are well versed in the issues of Fatca, but when people discover this site for the first time, it might be helpful to have a place they can go get some sense of direction to begin with. Some kind of “simplified” starting point would help people a lot…. Just thinking out loud here…..
Yes Isaac is facing away……looking away from FATCA.
and Deb, your insulting silly accusations and smears aren’t worth answering. In fact they are libelous. I don’t care if you say you can’t work with me. It’s the ‘can’t please everyone’ thing. Obviously you want to be the town graphics designer. Fine, I don’t care really. Get your checkbook out, it’s expensive.
Here is a good cartoon on this article that tells a story without much in the way of words…

Chears, I apologized twice for stepping on your original ad. I SINCERELY thanked you for the effort you put into your ad. I said we’d never work together because your actions made it clear you did not want to collaborate with me. Everything else I said was merely opinion, which I believe I’m entitled to.
It is my understanding your ad will run on Thursday. I’m fine with that.
That’s not what bothers me. It’s ludicrous to equate me somehow with the compliance industry so I assume you did not mean that and I accept.
We shall all, everyone here work positively and preemptively and strike now and forever until we get justice and our Charter rights back. I urge everyone to consider picking up a newspaper and look at the ads? The first thing to notice is they are all quite different and so should we be. If however the powers that be here, if there are actually any at all, deem a certain campaign should be nationwide then we should all support it but because that can cost us all so much money it might behoove us to get the opinions of actual print ad professionals or an advertising agency friendly to our plight so it gets done right. That said, not many would support sensationalistic ads but that’s what I think is needed. IN YOUR FACE HARPER IS WHERE WE WANT TO BE……JMO
Did I ever say I wouldn’t collaborate with you or did I suggest to others that the more the merrier and we should catalog our ads, invite others to make some too so people can choose ones they think are appropriate for them to run in their localities.
What upsets me, not regarding you or me, is the obvious reticence for members here to understand and contribute to our propaganda war on FATCA and Harper even to the extend of worrying about the morality and truthfulness of our print ads. Here I go with another eloquent rant, I feel it coming on, hold on while I go get a drink.
Ok I’m back, a drink didn’t work so here it comes……everyone block your eyes and ears…..I DON’T GIVE A FUCKING RATS ASS WHAT THE POWERS IN CHARGE THINK OF ANY OF US TWISTING THINGS A SLIGHT BIT. ooops caps lock keeps acting up. The plan we should adopt is to get EVERYONE IN CANADA to think it affects them whether it does or it doesn’t (I think it does) and visit this site resulting in general reactionary chaos and confusion in the opposing ranks when their phones keep ringing off the hook. We need Canadians in general, whatever background they have, to start screaming loudly. Harper and his crowd of traitors are fucking liars, all of them, every party in Canada except the Greens.
I guess I’m just an old hippie radical loudmouth activist and that definitely rubs some conservative types here the wrong way but after 49 years of protest activities I think I know what works.
and I changed the strange font on the original ad because you are correct. Waiting for 411 to post it and replace the PDF. It”s all quite simple to do.
