@Joe Smith.
I am cancelling my physical presence. I have another commitment to go to on Saturday up my way but I hope to catch the conference on line.
It was a difficult decision as I did look forward to this event.
I can’t attend on the 20th, only the next day’s events.
Note to all who might go on the 20th or both days. The panel on the 20th includes these participants:
Jay Stanley, Senior Policy Analyst, American Civil Liberties Union’s Speech, Privacy and Technology Project
Sukanya Pillay, General Counsel and Executive Director, Canadian Civil Liberties Association
Colin Freeze, National Security Reporter, Globe & Mail
Moderator: Andrew Clement, University of Toronto Faculty of Information
So, perhaps there would be an opportunity to raise FATCA afterwards or during question period – to catch the interest and understanding of the ACLU speaker – as to why the ACLU and US resident Americans should be interested in the implications of how FATCA – an American law, threatens us and breaches the privacy and data integrity of the entire rest of the globe – and the effects on both those deemed US persons outside the US, but all those who are NOT US persons.
And, there will be media there – Colin Freeze, Globe and Mail. http://www.realprivacy.ca/index.php/ambassador/colin-freeze/ “Focussing on Canadian security matters for the past decade, Colin Freeze has reported extensively on the interplay between government, police, spy services, and the judiciary.
A member of the Globe and Mail’s Investigative Team, he reports largely from Toronto and occasionally Ottawa. In the past, he has been sent on assignment to Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, and El Salvador.
In the past year, he has used access to information laws to report extensively and exclusively on a federal government surveillance agency (CSEC) including its collection of Canadian citizen’s “metadata”.”
Unfortunately, we missed this January 2014 event by the Ontario Privacy Commissioner:

@Joe,
IRSCF and sympathetic spouse @Laura Secord will see you at the bar on Thursday.
Hey, great idea. I just got back from the Montreal meeting, which was hosted by Allison Christians (Our IBS friend for sure) at McGill university. Time very well spent! I recommend these meetings to everyone.
Will be delighted to see you all there at 4:30!
8 confirmed, we are in business.
So sorry, but I have to work a catering event until about 3pm and am usually exhausted after those. I did not plan to come until the Friday event. It’s too bad because I would love to meet and greet all of the people who I see online, but have not put a face to. 🙁 I will be icing my sore feet and thinking of you all.
About Friday
Several of us are going to lunch and the two afternoon panels.
Not a morning person myself……. ;-P
I had registered for this event and dearly wish I could go but, I just cannot. There is too much going on here lately with visitors, running to doctors and the like. Have a great meeting and I’ll be with you all in spirit! Thanks to everyone who is able to go! Sometimes I wish I lived in Toronto!
@Atticus
You know we will miss you!
