The Richmond Hill session for March 29 has been expanded and based upon the program we had last June.
- When: Saturday March 29, 2014 – 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 pm
- Where: Emmanuel Anglican Church – 15 MacKay Drive, Richmond Hill, ON L4C 6N9
Session I: The Financial and Emotional Costs of U.S. Citizenship Abroad
Session II: US Citizenship Abroad and Compliance Issues
PROGRAMME
I: The Financial and Emotional Costs of U.S. Citizenship Abroad
- When: 10:00 am to 12:00 noon
- Who: A senior licensed psychologist
- What: Focus on the emotional issues arising from US persecution of Americans abroad
Description:Since 2011, the Obama administration has subjected millions of people living outside the United States to a vicious attack. This includes reaching into Canada. The IRS has literally threatened millions of innocent persons living outside the United States with fines exceeding their personal wealth–up to 380% of their financial assets. For many, this experience has taken a toll on their mental and physical health, and that has been even greater than the financial damage. A psychologist will address the emotional issues associated with the threats and demands that IRS is making. He will describe his own emotional experience and encourage others to share their own emotional reactions to these circumstances. Strategies will be discussed on how to cope with the stress caused by the IRS and the difficulties of living as a U.S. person abroad.
BREAK FOR LUNCH 12:00 – 1:00 pm
II: US Citizenship Abroad and Compliance Issues – Where we have come from. Where we are. Where we may be going.
- When: 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
- Who: John Richardson, LL.B., J.D
- What: Focus on more practical issues
Description: Beginning in the summer of 2011 the IRS aided by the media and cross-border professionals began a relentless attack on U.S. citizens in Canada. The spectre of FATCA has worsened the situation. The purpose of this session will be to review:
- Summer of 2011 – where we have come from
- 2011 to now – where we are now
- 2015 and onwards – where we may be going
What might this mean for U.S. citizenship in Canada? What are some possible responses? How can/should you respond to a difficult situation?
You may feel you need help because:
- You are or have been threatened by the imposition of life-altering fines for failing to file information returns you had no reason to know existed;
- You feel victimized by the Canadian and other non-U.S. media, who have constantly referred to you as a “tax cheat” and advised you to “come clean”
- You feel “taken advantage of” by the so-called “cross-border professionals”.
- You just want to be compliant with the law, but you receive conflicting advice, and nobody seems to be able to tell you how to do it, yet they are asking for “huge” fees;
- You feel completely misunderstood by the non-U.S. citizens in your life. They can’t understand the feelings of fear, betrayal and injustice that you feel.
- In some cases, this experience has put your marriage at risk;
- Your health has been dramatically affected by all of this. You can’t sleep. You worry. You have gained or lost weight. You are no longer the happy person you were. You feel that your life has been stolen from you.
Please note that although this event will take place on March 29, it is NOT a session on how to file a U.S. tax return. The discussion will however, include relevant U.S. tax issues and reporting/information returns.
- There is to be no video or audio taping or photos of ANY part of the day.
- The day will be extended to encourage more people to attend.
- Admission:$20 cash payable at the door. (to cover costs)
Information presented is NOT intended or offered as legal or accounting advice specific to your situation.
@ML 1776, @ George, @ Charl…. agree with you wholeheartedly on the stress experienced in visiting stateside and the profound sense of relief at coming home to UK..
I am due to go in May (visit ageing parents) and , apart from my joy at seeing Mom/Dad and 2-3 close friends and my cousins, it is duty and necessity rather than pleasure. I chatted to a friend today and told him all about fact that greencard holders are considered USP for taxable reasons even if they haven’t lived tghere for years, greencard has expired. and until and unless they file the I-4079 (?? think that is the right form) the law says they file tax returns/pay tax if required. I spent some minutes telling him about every private pension fund in UK needs to be filed 4x *(8938, 3520, 3520A, and FBAR). needless to say, this chap will not now be considering to work in US. I also told him the story about 6,900 + South Koreans renouncing their greeen cards-again jaws dropped.
one story at a time, one less STEM immigrant at a time-justice will be served. I am american in heart and mind and soul and culture and heritage-i am darn proud of my accent and history and nothing, and no one, can take that away. as Mark twain said
“Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it.”
the anti expat groundswell has been building for 20 years or so, since the 1996 Reed amendment-Obama has seen it through to its logical conclusion………
Keep the faith brockers-you are a light in dark places.
@Crystal London – I too am a long term ex-pat who has lived in the UK. If an opportunity comes off, I’m definitely heading across the Pond again soon. Again I too am American at heart, but equally miss my life abroad. The US rat race is the same as years ago and I’m tired of it only after a short time. FATCA for me is the final straw. I’m not ‘Property of the USA Government,’ and because my grandparents and father decided to emigrate to the US, it doesn’t give the USG the right to hound me across the world.
Corrupt IRS traumatizes & steals $$ from homelanders as well – aka “those living on the plantation”. Interesting link below “Law Lets I.R.S. Seize Accounts on Suspicion, No Crime Required”.
