The Richmond Hill session for March 29 has been expanded and based upon the program we had last June.
- When: Saturday March 29, 2014 – 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 pm
- Where: Emmanuel Anglican Church – 15 MacKay Drive, Richmond Hill, ON L4C 6N9
Session I: The Financial and Emotional Costs of U.S. Citizenship Abroad
Session II: US Citizenship Abroad and Compliance Issues
PROGRAMME
I: The Financial and Emotional Costs of U.S. Citizenship Abroad
- When: 10:00 am to 12:00 noon
- Who: A senior licensed psychologist
- What: Focus on the emotional issues arising from US persecution of Americans abroad
Description:Since 2011, the Obama administration has subjected millions of people living outside the United States to a vicious attack. This includes reaching into Canada. The IRS has literally threatened millions of innocent persons living outside the United States with fines exceeding their personal wealth–up to 380% of their financial assets. For many, this experience has taken a toll on their mental and physical health, and that has been even greater than the financial damage. A psychologist will address the emotional issues associated with the threats and demands that IRS is making. He will describe his own emotional experience and encourage others to share their own emotional reactions to these circumstances. Strategies will be discussed on how to cope with the stress caused by the IRS and the difficulties of living as a U.S. person abroad.
BREAK FOR LUNCH 12:00 – 1:00 pm
II: US Citizenship Abroad and Compliance Issues – Where we have come from. Where we are. Where we may be going.
- When: 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
- Who: John Richardson, LL.B., J.D
- What: Focus on more practical issues
Description: Beginning in the summer of 2011 the IRS aided by the media and cross-border professionals began a relentless attack on U.S. citizens in Canada. The spectre of FATCA has worsened the situation. The purpose of this session will be to review:
- Summer of 2011 – where we have come from
- 2011 to now – where we are now
- 2015 and onwards – where we may be going
What might this mean for U.S. citizenship in Canada? What are some possible responses? How can/should you respond to a difficult situation?
You may feel you need help because:
- You are or have been threatened by the imposition of life-altering fines for failing to file information returns you had no reason to know existed;
- You feel victimized by the Canadian and other non-U.S. media, who have constantly referred to you as a “tax cheat” and advised you to “come clean”
- You feel “taken advantage of” by the so-called “cross-border professionals”.
- You just want to be compliant with the law, but you receive conflicting advice, and nobody seems to be able to tell you how to do it, yet they are asking for “huge” fees;
- You feel completely misunderstood by the non-U.S. citizens in your life. They can’t understand the feelings of fear, betrayal and injustice that you feel.
- In some cases, this experience has put your marriage at risk;
- Your health has been dramatically affected by all of this. You can’t sleep. You worry. You have gained or lost weight. You are no longer the happy person you were. You feel that your life has been stolen from you.
Please note that although this event will take place on March 29, it is NOT a session on how to file a U.S. tax return. The discussion will however, include relevant U.S. tax issues and reporting/information returns.
- There is to be no video or audio taping or photos of ANY part of the day.
- The day will be extended to encourage more people to attend.
- Admission:$20 cash payable at the door. (to cover costs)
Information presented is NOT intended or offered as legal or accounting advice specific to your situation.
The need for this event says it all.
I’m going to try to attend this. This is much needed. I’ve been on an emotional roller coaster and had some really difficult unexpected responses to losing my citizenship. Like an identity crisis. I’m too old for this crap. At any rate this isn’t on the train line I don’t think but, I’m still going to try and come.
Thanks for organizing it and thank you to the Dr. for helping out.
Bravo. Good for you all for offering this once again.
That such intervention is needed is shameful — brought to us by US legislators and US over-reaching citizenship-based taxation and our own country’s government leaders for allowing it into Canada.
Shameful!
@AtticusinCanada,
You should try never having been a US citizen and still having to pay all the taxes, not be able to vote and fill in all the duplicate informational tax forms!
@Obama people
A week or so ago I paid my OVDP Obama tax (430 form 8621’s). Please don’t vote for the punish the rich guys again. Some of us have to live here and are trapped by the exit tax.
Neill,
You are *almost* as “entrapped” into never-ending US citizenship with the Exit Tax as is my son — and anyone like him with some sort of ‘mental incapacity’. And, again, it is shameful!
@Neill, I believe my husband always a Canadian fits that description and as far as my son is concerned he does too!
Nothing in this world pisses people off than being liable to tax and receive nothing in return. If he US wants the tax, then start dishing out Medicare, Unemployment Insurance, and all benefits given to Homelanders. Short and simple.
Sobering comments from US Expats in GB about FATCA.

Those worried about the 50,000.00 threshold need not be concerned because the banks will turn you in even if you have 5.00 if you believe the opinion of one of the commenters on that thread.
Latest ‘US Person’ the sitting King of Thailand.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bhumibol_Adulyadej
Born at Mt Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Unless he’s renounced, if the Thai Gov’t signs an IGA he’s an ‘US Person.’
How about someone does a famous ‘US Persons’ part of IBS website with ‘famous’ US persons listed, almost like the ‘FBI Most Wanted.’ Why should ordinary ‘US Persons,’ comply when they skirt the rules?

check this article from yahoo about tax problems US expats have, it seemed pretty fair for a change, no “evil tax cheat” cliches…
Soon Canadian banks will charge “surcharges” to US person bank accounts only to offset the Fatca reporting costs.
@Tim, that article has been pulled!!!
It was the same article that was in CNN Money.
The link just to that article just worked for me.
The article disappeared from the Yahoo headlines for a while but its back now. It really puts a human face on the issue. I wonder what the government paid liar Robert Stack would have to say?
Why expats are ditching their U.S. passports

@Pacifica, it still doesn’t work for me, perhaps because of the browser I’m using. Glad it’s still out there though! 😉
@ MonaLisa,
It’s also on CNN’s site. Hopefully, your browser will work for that one.

This just appeared on the zerohedge.com website:
“Why Americans Are Dumping their US Citizenship: 5 Case Studies.”
Article details the suffering of expats…

Yet another variation on the CNN article but interesting nonetheless. Skip the repeat sections and go to the particular takes in each article:

There was a time when I boldly proclaimed, God bless the USA.
Today, all I can muster is God save the USA.
There was a time when I was proud to be an American!
Today, I am gleeful when people ask (EU), are you from Canada?
I used to enjoy going back to visit, today it is a foreign place and I am in fear of the government. I only visit because I have to not because I want to. My blood pressure goes up dramatically, it does I check it and it stays elevated. It drops literally when I cross the border home.
The point of my never going back is fast approaching.
I am a grown adult, did a lot for my country and I reflect and write this with water in my eyes. What happened? And its not a democrat issue or a republican issue.
@George
Well said and sorrowfully many, many folks are experiencing the exact same feelings. I feel sad and anxious and scared and confused and betrayed and…….on and on.
I have to go to the US in April and I feel my blood pressure rising already.
@Pacifica and @Sally, found it and read the article which is very relevant to our issues. @George and @Charles, I share your bewilderment. I felt very nervous when I was actually questioned and detained (for about 35 minutes) before being allowed through!
Once in, my visit went fine but shared your sense of relief once safely back in Blighty!
