May God bless Gwen for having the courage to stand up to this. I now know why Jim flaherty and Stephen Harper could not address my letter of Nov 23 2013. they didn’t want to give me an honest answer. Political play, yes. Now, we are all a sacrifice for Canada. Well, we are not sitting down. The “sacrificed” will not stop until we see justice under the UN and international law. This is far from over Flaherty and Harper!
@Petros
Excellent interview, Gwen
I noted this on the site:
Nick Giambruno: Are Canadians aware of FATCA and the US system of citizenship-based taxation? What is the general awareness of these issues?
I just called my MP office ..one of them. I asked her about FATCA and she knew nothing. NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!
I have appointments all this week but I shall try to call the other two offices . I want to know if My NDP MP will be voting for FATCA… I see on his website he has NOTHING!!!!!! on FATCA.
Geez , we are screwed.
God bless you Gwen.. thank you for having the courage to come forward and say the things you said. I do belive in UK there are 250KI+++ USPs who need to hear your message, have their own OMG moments and get on with the business of either renouncing or using their power to kick back at USG which has shot itself in all feet to criminalise what could have been its best soft power sell reps….. heartfelt thanks again for your contribution
Bravo and thanks, Gwevil. Your interview was right on the money — the US tax money to be stolen from you and your country.

Oops messed up the bold formatting. Fix please?
Way to go, Gwen 😀
Thanks guys! Every little drop in the bucket will eventually fill it to the top right?
I am in the same boat as Gwen except I am a senior citizen living off of a small RRIF and CPP. I have never done nor was aware of the need of FBAR reporting nor applied for a tax deferral on my RRSP. I can’t afford a fancy international accountant. Though I owe no US taxes because of my meager income the penalty for not filing all the proper forms is $10,000 per form per year. I will have to file bankruptcy. If I renounce citizenship and don’t pay these fines I will be considered a “covered expatriate”. Having a Canadian passport with place of birth being in the US I will be denied entry to the country if I am deemed a covered expatriate. My son lives there and I might be a grandma soon. I am so upset that my head might fall off. I just don’t know what to do. One person posted “I vacillate between being in a homicidal rage and suicidal depression”. Though a bit extreme, I get it.
@Charl
I am so sorry for that FATCA has caused you so much anquish. Many of us feel the same as you do. We need more details if you feel you can provide them. . It is possible you may be able to relinquish. If that is the case than you will not have to file US returns or FBARS.
Welcome to IBS. You will find kindness and caring and good information to help you on your FATCA journey.
@Gwen, Great Job! Your help is really appreciated!
Now does everyone understand why they need to drop everything and buy gold bullion? We need to sell US and Canadian dollars in order to drive the USD down so far that it will be dropped as the worlds reserve currency. Do your little part to drive the USA off this planet so they can join Hitler in his grave in Hell
PLEASE PEOPLE….SELL YOUR CANADIAN DOLLARS AND DROP YOUR TRANSNATIONAL BANK ACCOUNTS.
If we have enough word of mouth contacts, friends, family and business associates we can purchase enough gold to drive the Canadian dollar down to .75 in retribution for what they have done to us. Again, do not buy paper gold, its worthless, buy physical
@ ChearsBigEars
Some people, like myself, do not know where to buy gold bullion. I hope you are not advocating to buy gold coins because I once thought it would be nice to hold an actual ounce of silver in the form of a rather lovely silver coin I saw at the post office. However, it would have cost me 3 times the value of the actual silver in the coin. Didn’t look so bright and shiny and alluring after that.
I would love to give you more information but even posting here makes me fear that the IRS will be coming to my door any minute now.
I can’t relinquish, I have to renounce as my getting Canadian citizenship in 1983 was not an expatriating act. (I also kept my US passport).
Awesome Gwen – you’re a force.
@Charl,
Too late. I think they are on there way now. Just kidding. Welcome to the nightmare. I am quite sure IRS knows who I am by now, and for sure Harper and Co do, so its just a matter of time before the penalty letters arrive in the mail. I have the picture frames all picked out for them.
@ Charl
Welcome. You could trust (I know its hard to trust after the IGA betrayal) that the CRA will not collect either US tax or US penalties from anyone with Canadian citizenship and then never cross the border again. The IRS only has collection and penalty jurisdiction on US soil. It cannot come here and pound on your door. I have not been to the USA for nearly 20 years (reasons totally unrelated to FATCA) and have not found it a hardship. Having said that, I realize that for many people that this is not an option because of family concerns.
You could ask Pacifica777 (Brock admin.) to send you an e-mail to start a correspondence with her (if you feel comfortable doing that). You do that by simply stating that in a comment here (admin. has our e-mail addresses and holds them safe). Pacific777 is quite awesome about giving good yet careful “advice”. Realize, of course, that none of us is qualified as a US tax expert.
You could trust … that the CRA will not collect either US tax or US penalties from anyone with Canadian citizenship.
In Canada we trust. In CRA we trust. HaHaHa!
@ usxcanada
You missed the parenthesis — (I know it’s hard to trust after the IGA betrayal) — got something other than cynicism to offer then please do.
@Em
I would so love to talk with someone from Pacifica777. I just don’t know where to turn. I have called several accountants that advertise being specialists in international tax issues and their fees are way, way beyond my means. Boy, in looking for the hedge fund folk they are destroying senior citizens on fixed incomes. I’ll bet they never get the big guys with their fancy lawyers but we grannies will be left bankrupt. How can this be allowed to happen? The IRS is destroying some Canadian’s lives and our government is letting it happen. The worry is literally destroying my life. Strangely it is all, not about money I owe, but papers I didn’t even know I had to submit. The penalty is $10,000 per form. I should have filed 2/year for 6 years ….I owe $120,000 dollars. I don’t have $120,000 dollars. (Plus whatever the penalty is for not requesting a tax deferral on my RRSP). If I don’t pay I can’t go to the US to see my grandchildren!!! Even if I renounce I still have to pay.

I posted this yesterday on another thread and YES I am ABSOLUTELY recommending getting Canadian Maple Leafs.
You can but gold bullion at any branch of TD but why give those dogs any business and besides their premiums are ridiculous
Royal Canadian Mint locations but again you will pay a higher premium. AND may be taxed……BUT listen there is NO TAX ON .999 bullion. DO NOT BUY COLLECTIBLE COINS……RIP OFF ALERT
@ Charl
Pacific777 will probably contact you by way of the e-mail address you used to sign in. She lives somewhere in Ontario (used to think she must be somewhere on the West Coast — not so). You are in your OMG (Oh My God) moment and we have all been there and some frequently revisit that awful place involuntarily (like me). I never added up all my “penalties” but a rough estimate would be $500K. If you are interested go to the bottom of the page to read my profile.

Try any of these:
https://online.kitco.com/buy/gold-silver.html
http://www.cand.org/
but do not let them sell you anything but .999 gold or silver
This is another great list but keep with the ones in Canada in my opinion
