Border officials to share travellers’ info with federal government http://t.co/tKhehkYgns via @torontostar

The article begins with:
Canadian border officials plan to share personal information obtained under a new Canada-U.S. border data exchange program with other federal departments, the Star has learned.
The program, in which Ottawa and Washington will start sharing their citizens’ travel and biographic data this summer, means anyone from Canada travelling to or from the United States by land can have his or her information passed on to federal departments.
The Canada Border Services Agency confirmed the new practice and said data would be passed on only in accordance with stringent rules.
But the revelation is raising questions about privacy, how the information will be used and whether the federal government plans to use this data to crack down on immigration, citizenship, health and tax cheats.
What “stringent rules”???
Is this like the over sight of the so called Fisa Court??
I feel like a canary in a coal mine with this FATCA mess warning people of all the “data collecting” as a harbinger of ridiculous controls on people’s movements and as a way to intimidate people from speaking out, traveling when they don’t want you to or where they dont’ want you to.
This is all just so wrong headed.
This has been in the works for a while and I believe they piloted a limited version of it at one of the bigger crossings already.
Our Minister of Immigration touts this as one of the most awesome things ever but not so loudly that most Canadians will ever know about it.
One of the other things we will begin allowing is armed US custom officials doing pre-inspections of goods being shipped south on our soil. Yep, armed US officials on our side of the border. It’s all about making sure the goods will flow.
Hop, skip and a jump to pre-inspecting Canadians heading down there for shopping and holidays. Won’t that be awesome. The Americans can pre-inspect us before they inspect us on the way in and they can post-inspect us before we reach our border on the way out (all of their new border facilities are set up to corral and stop out-going traffic now too. Nifty. Good that we are such great friendly neighbors, eh?
@Yoga Girl and @Atticus in Canada
I am never going back so there is not problem for me as I won’t be showing up . but I do not like armed US custom officials doing pre-inspections of goods being shipped south on our soil. We lose our sovereignty by letting that happen. .Next they want to put a few military bases on our soil.
Happy Data Privacy Day from Canada’s Privacy Commissioner.
