I like the term “sheeple” 🙂
@Calgary,
I guess the sheeple are too afraid of the big bad wolf (USA) to stand up for their rights as people.
Mike — good for you. Keep in touch with your efforts with the Canadian native community. I’ve sent your comment onto a ‘US Person’ friend married to a Canadian Metis. She has not seen it necessary to become a Canadian citizen (where she would have better protection). I hope she can read the importance of her family at least becoming very aware of what all this is, especially adult kids that are doing OK and one who has gotten a US passport (although still lives and works in Canada). Ignoring what is happening will not make it go away.
Go, Mike!!!!! Thanks!
Just to pick up on WhiteKat’s point about signing a petition under your own name, for something this important and that you say you care about:
Earlier today I forwarded the link to that petition website to several so-called (and boy do I mean so-called!) US persons I know. One of them is a a 70-year-old grandmother. She would qualify for a relinquishment CLN back to about 1980; she knows this, because I met with her at some length and walked her through the process. “She said, no I’m not applying for a CLN. Why the hell should I?” She came here because of Vietnam, with her ex-husband. She became a Canadian citizen, fully believed she’d thereby given up her US citizenship. She’s been stopped at the border when crossing on a Canadian passport with a US birthplace. She’s been told she needs a US passport. She’s said, no I don’t, I’m a Canadian and nothing else. Are you letting me in, or not? They let her in. She’s on their computer. She’s said to me that if a bank or our government turn her over, a 70-year-old-grandmother, she’s go to the media and make them wish they’d never been born. She means it. She used to work in media relations, she still has lots of contacts in the press bureau here.
She signed that petition under her own name.
Shame on anyone who reads this post, who is affected by FACTA, and doesn’t have the guts my 70-year-old-grandma friend has. Sign it, under your own name, or forfeit any sympathy or concern you’d ever have got from me.
That’s one ballsy 70 year-old grandma friend you have, schubert. I aspire.
@ Mike
Akwesasne may have some people getting up to speed on FATCA and hopefully getting organized. A few signed the petition that MP Ted Hsu will present and were going to talk to others.
@Calgary
She heard what David Jacobson said, two years ago, and she actually is a 70-year-old grandma. If the US goes after her, she’ll track Jacobson down and haunt him to his grave. I know her. I sure as hell wouldn’t want to tangle with, even though she’s half my weight and about 2/3 my height. The word feisty was invented for her.
My regards and admiration to her. Doesn’t sound like she’ll need any help, but if she does, I am another 70-year old.
My mom sounds the same and would probably say the exact same thing. As for me, I agree with her. They can try to drag me kicking and screaming across the border and clap me in irons. I am NOT giving in to the bastards!

Because I have signed previous AVAAZ petitions using the name which matches my e-mail address (not my real name) the petition has that name as my signature — it happened automatically. Sorry to forfeit your sympathy, Schubert. AVAAZ petitions are quite informal actually. They simply show how much interest there is in any given issue. I say sign in whatever which way is comfortable for you. It’s the number of signatures which matter. Just be honest enough to only sign once.
The petition which will be presented to parliament must of course be signed correctly and I most certainly did that.
Does anyone know if this petition will be sent out by Avaaz to its regular network? I usually receive Avaaz petitions and so far it hasn’t shown up in my in box.
@schubert1975 …….thank you for the “prod”…..I have signed the “informal” AVAAZ petition even though I am based in the UK ……. I so wish we had a UK equivalent of IBS….. maybe “TeaPartyReverseEngineed”???? mmmmmmmmmmaybe not doesn’t meet the acronym tes…..
any volunteers? just post on IBS and we can hook up.!
@ Em. also appreciate your comments on the issue of anonymity and the nature of petitions.
as I always say: Brockers rock as a totality!!!!
The purpose of those petitions is to connect your issue to their mailing lists. Most of the time this would be mutually beneficial, depending upon the objectives of the organization versus your own. And the organization objectives can also be more of the funders & founders (such as Move-on’s George Soros).
@ Mike
How did the newspaper interview go? What is the name of the publication?
The newspaper interview went well… in fact, the interviewer might have some problems come July 1….. He is worried now too and still in shock.
I gave the information to the Aboriginal People’s Television Network and they too are in shock. The interviewer is doing some homework on this. He feels there might be a lot people, more on the Akwesasne reserve than on the Six Nations reserve(in our area), that this will affect. He is working on this and truly thinks this is huge and will impact Native People’s in Canada.
He will keep me posted and I’ll stay on this, you bet!
Thank you, Mike.
I signed the petition, with my real name, a few days ago, but I see there are only 70 signers so far. Despite this petition and all other attempts to raise awareness of FATCA, it seems clear to me that major opposition to FATCA won’t emerge until its implementation occurs (next July 1, as threatened?) and people are asked to sign waivers of their privacy rights. Then the banks and the Canadian government should expect resistance and even anger from their “US person” customers/citizens (most of whom will be taken by surprise) , despite the TD Bank’s daydream of making the process “comfortable”. I wonder how prepared they are for that anger.
Sadly, as in the Move-On petition, it appears people are going to have to be hit in the head with a board or a brick to know they are affected. That will be done by their Canadian and other-country banks. Sheeple are sheeple.
AnonAnon,
I agree, most ‘US persons’ don’t have a clue what is about to hit them, or if they do, they think someone else will fix the problem for them so they won’t have to do anything about it for themselves.
@AnonAnon
And of those in the latter category, many feel helpless. I know when I was a single parent barely getting by, I would have felt pretty terrified and helpless and probably would have left it up to others. I would, however, had been extremely grateful and forever owe a debt of gratitude to those who did.
Just got this offline (from persons in the FATCA-know) and I’ve got to pass it on.
I don’t know what to say either …
I don’t want any of savings for Joel’s future FATCA’d away to pay for all of this absurdity and non-accountability / responsibility. I’m so glad most of my family is OUT.
Subject: Re: Home ownership– Dumb, Dumb and Dumber?
Hey, the Federal government’s debt is 108% of GDP – why should ordinary American citizens not follow this excellent example by their government? Pres. Obama is even upset that he can’t get unlimited authority to borrow as much as he wants! So, to “compromise” he’s willing to “restrain” himself to only $2 trillion in new borrowing authority – while he claims he is reducing the budget deficit “faster than at any time in history” and the US Treasury announced the biggest increase in revenue in history. SO why do you think Pres. Obama needs $2 trillion at all? That amount would increase the debt-to-GDP ratio of the Federal government to 120% with no plan to pay it down at all!
This is like buying a house for $100,000 where the bank gives you $120,000 with no assurance whatsoever that you will be able to pay off the mortgage. You might recall that the sub-prime mortgage business is what caused the financial implosion in 2008 to begin with. So how is having our government put the entire country into a sub-SUB-prime financial state supposed to solve this problem?
How can anyone in this administration say with a straight face that this is successful financial and economic management of the USA? BTW, while no one was looking, our trade deficit remains $750 billion and our international investment deficit (the amount of money taken out of the USA more than the USA takes out of the rest of the world) has gone up from $2.3 trillion when Obama took office to over $4 trillion. This is like 30% of a company’s stock being stolen out the back door while no one is looking.
All of this, of course, before the effects of the “Affordable [SIC] Care Act” that was supposed to “lower” [SIC] healthcare costs hits the economy. “Change You Can Believe In”? Not me!
On Thursday, November 28, 2013:
In a bid to stem taxpayer losses for bad loans guaranteed by Federal housing agencies Fanny Mae and Freddy Mac, Senator Bob Corker (R-Tenn.)
proposed that borrowers be required to make a 5% down payment in order to qualify for a loan.
His proposal was rejected 57-42 on a straight party-line vote because, as Senator Chris Dodd (D-Conn) explained, “Passage of such a requirement
would restrict home ownership to only those who can afford it.”
I can’t add anything to this; I just can’t. After all, how un-American can you be with an attitude like this? The right to own a home certainly should not be restricted to just those who can afford it.
@Mike
There is another petition that you should consider circulating and signing that is addressed to the Canadian Government. The entire text can be found at: http://isaacbrocksociety.ca
Click on Petition to Canadian Parliament (on right under Anti-FATCA Petitions!, Sign Now!)
There are some whereases and then:
Therefore, we request the Canadian government to:
1. Immediately assure Canadian citizens and residents that all Canadian citizens and residents have the same rights to privacy in managing their financial affairs.
2. Advise Canadian financial institutions that they must comply with Canadian laws.
3. Assure Canadian citizens and residents that those Canadian laws and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms will not be changed for FATCA.
4. Cease negotiating with the United States on any agreement to implement FATCA that will contradict Canada’s Charter, its current banking, privacy and human rights laws and the current Canada-US Tax Treaty.
This petition will be presented in the House by MP Ted Hsu (Kingston and the Islands).
@ Mike
A few from Akwesasne have signed the above-mentioned petition.
@bubblebustin, When I was working full time carting three kids off to school and day care, I would not have had time for much if any anti-FATCA protesting either. I am fortunate, that I am now a fulltime homemaker, and although busy, can afford to find some time for this fight. I was mostly complaining about the people who could do something, but won’t either because they think that the ‘powers that be’ will make everything OK, or they think other ‘US persons’ have it all under control. We don’t. We need their help.
Fatca is another version the US government’ s NSA program to spy people’s private information. What a shame! The citizenship taxing system is unfair. If I had known that, I would not get my green card. It is very disappointing that the US government would treat people like that.
