FATCA Fact Sheet Anti-FATCA Slogans Protest Press Release
AtticusinCanada has received an official permit to protest on Parliament Hill Oct. 16, 2013, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.! We will meet at 9 a.m. in front of Parliament Hill and proceed to the Hill itself once we have a reasonably sized group. Families and even children are welcome if you feel they are old enough! We ask that everyone bring their own sign. A good idea would be to email AtticusinCanada with the slogans you would like to use, so we have as few duplicates as possible.

The mini-protest in Ottawa on Sept 9, 2013, garnered some well needed media attention. Just imagine how much we could achieve if more Brockers joined forces for a larger protest at parliament hill this fall!
Many of us believe that a formal announcement of an IGA for FATCA is just around the corner. It’s time to ramp up with the push back. The letter writing and emailing to our elected representatives has been great, and some illuminating articles have been written by Lynne and Victoria, but we need to do more.
Atticusincanada and I would like to be the drivers towards organizing a larger protest, but first we need to gather enough participants. For those Brockers who can commit to coming to Ottawa for a day, and would like to join us, please email Atticusincanada at atticusincanada@gmail.com.
Atticus,
Well said. Exactly. The only way to be fair is the good old ‘level playing field’. Again: apples and oranges / US citizenship-based taxation and The Rest of the World residence-based taxation. Common sense makes a lot of sense.
@FATCA dump, you raise an interesting point here and I’ve been thinking about it lately. I keep hearing some homelanders talking about “it’s the LAW” even though it is their law and not ours and even though it is a stupid harmful law.
To those people I say that there have been many laws challenged over the years for the fact that they were doing more harm than any good. Laws against voting rights, laws against equal protection and access, laws of slavery, laws that stunk to high heaven and not until those so called “laws” were challenged by those most affected by them did anything change. In other words Canada needs to in the name of doing what is “right” defy the U.S. law and stick to their own. The U.S. needs to be told to mind it’s own damned business first and sod off. When they can get their own house in order *cough* Delaware, Florida, Nevada etc. then they can tell others what to do. When they can create banking laws there that offer protections instead of predatory lenders causing a housing crash then perhaps other nations should listen to them.
They can’t run their own lives or business. Why is anyone trying to bend over backwards to do things their way.
It’s a fantastic rally cry—-This We are not a MYTH link should be highlighted on Brock & Sandbox & whomever.
If someone should find a way that people could load up their own pictures upon some site, it might be superfantastic.
Also, that the pics might be smaller so as more could be seen on one page—-perhaps the latest ones being the largest—encouraging people to join—-some webpage design.
Any computer nerds know of any solutions?
I think I get the gist of these discussions. What say you we start by enforcing a 30% tax on all of Bill Gates holdings of CN Rail (apparently as of the end of last December he owned 12% of it) if he chooses to sell it. Or impose this same tax on Carl Icahn who just bought 6% of Talisman Energy. Etc. Etc. Of course, other countries would not be affected by this. Now THAT would bring home the point to the US. Of course we do need foreign investment but I don’t think it would hurt us much at all until this blows over. You can bet their government would feel some serious pressure.

Any possibility of a few “no to FATCA” signs outside the Oct 31- Nov 2 Conservative Convention in Calgary?
Also, does anyone know of any delegate who might be willing to ask an anti-FATCA question or try to obtain support at the convention for an anti-FATCA policy? There will be sessions on taxation, constitution, and policies.
I’m game if I am not alone. Who is in or near Calgary?
@Calgary,
Another protest, this time in Calgary, is a great idea. We need to show the government that we are everywhere, not just in Ottawa, and that we are not going to stop putting the pressure on. Perhaps you could create a separate post inviting people to join, otherwise your suggestion will get lost in the comments.
I agree, two is enough to make a difference!
Will there also be a few “No to Canadian banks imposing FATCA” signs for a Toronto mini-protest on November 13 and 14 outside the Metro Convention Centre?
The Conference is the “Canadian Institute’s 19th Annual REGULATORY COMPLIANCE for Financial Institutions.”
Attendees will:
“Hear from ALL 5 Big Banks in Canada and more!
Hear from CIBC, TD Bank, Scotiabank, AMEX Bank of Canada, RBC Law Group, BMO Financial Group, HSBC Financial Canada, Manulife Financial, ATB Financial, Travelers and JPMorgan Chase Bank” WHO ALL AIM TO HELP THE US IMPOSE FATCA ON CANADIANS.
The banks will teach attendees at the conference how to: “[Navigate] the hurdles preventing [Canadian FIs] from achieving compliance with FATCA.”
John Staples (Nov 14) will provide a lecture on “Preparing to Implement the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA)” which will include …”an update on your most pressing FATCA questions and understand how Canadian FIs will perform and achieve compliance with the final regulations.” and even “Evaluating the consequences of opting out of the compliance agreement.”
The Privacy Commissioner of Ontario will also be there.

@IRSCompliant,
I was just saying to Atticus the other day, that we need to protest the banks next! If someone local to TO, wants to do the organizing, I might be able to get away for one of those days (probably not two because my spouse would have to take the day off work to take kids back and forth to school).
My words too, WhiteKat!

I’ve just subscribed to receive the CBA’s news releases. Maybe they’ll send notifications of upcoming events.
Might you be able to go bubblebustin? The banks are our worst adversaries here in Canada over FATCA, though they pretend to be our friends. It would be awesome to have a largish group of protestors for this one!!
I wish I could, but a trip to Toronto isn’t something I could swing right now. If they’d let me go to Cuba, I might have been able to stop on the way 🙂
@WhiteKat
Not meaning to say I wouldn’t be interested in participating in a similar event closer to home if the opportunity presented itself!
