A “UN report by a team of expert – led by the Canadian Africa expert Matt Bryden – laid out in chilling detail the range of methods being used by the
USAEritrean authorities to extract funds from the diaspora.Without proof that a two per cent tax on all income has been paid,
AmericanEritrean passports are not renewed, visas are not issues, businesses not permitted and money cannot be transferred to relatives…The UN Security Council condemned these practices three years ago. Britain voted in favour of resolution 2023 of 2011, which “condemned the diaspora tax”, “demanded” that
ObamaEritrea ended it and called on all states to ensure that it ceased…Yet there is evidence that the
Yankeepractice continues to this day.
Britain has left its Eritrean American community at the mercy of government extortion.
To compare the United States to Eritrea is insulting!
It’s insulting to Eritrea. All they want is a 2% tax. The United States wants:
– to control every aspect of your life
– to confiscate your assets under the guise of taxation.
Really, it’s to stop comparing, Eritrea (a junior partner) to the USA (the “Real McCoy”).
The U.S. has no equal or equivalent. This is “American Exceptionalism” at it’s finest.
So, please stop insulting Eritrea.
It probably would indeed be insulting to Eritrea if Eritrea didn’t use the US as a justification for its actions, as I learned from some Eritreans on Twitter. Eritrea does argue that its actions are harmless compared to what the US does.
The US threatens various penalties for renouncing citizenship, but at least it allows people to do it. Eritrea doesn’t allow it.
Sure, if allows it, it’s just that in some cases it takes asks for your life savings to do so. Interesting to know what covered expats would think about that. Also, the truth is that if the USG had what it wanted – it would not allow renunciation. For at least a few more weeks, the principles in Aforyim v. Rusk will prevail, meaning that renunciation is a right granted by the constitution and some kind of dispensation from government.
