Some may want to keep an eye on this October 2013 conference in San Diego which will focus on Canada/US/Mexico. One of the panels will have the Canadian Taxpayer Ombudsman, the US Taxpayer Advocate (Nina Olson), and the Mexican Taxpayer Advocate. Moderating that panel will be Roy Berg, Moodys Tax Advisors in Calgary.
From the Canadian Taxpayer Ombudsman, Government of Canada Taxpayers’ Ombudsman — Upholding Your Service Rights:
Information for Canadian citizens that are subject to American tax laws
badger — it was YOUR idea. I just found out where to put it.
@ badger
Good one! Puts reams of words in 4 short lines.
badger, exactly! Wasn’t the Treasury’s plan to have everything in place b/c the whole world was simply going to have rolled over by now?
Anything can happen between now and next year or now and 2015.
I am appalled to read the “free publicity” of the IRS on my canadian dime, on the Official Canadian Government Web site.
This NEW Information should be made a single and most important subject of discussion…together with Flaherty’ letter. We are already being being sold out in this official notice. The current government is playing the Pontius Pilatus’ game already et “s’en lave les mains… ”
I do not want to feel that I am escaping the draft while being canadian in Canada. I am fully canadian. That’s it , that’s all. How interesting that the French version refers (warning about) to links in english only… PCO must have pondered this one for at least a week. (find a reference to an english document only on any department web site!) That’s great: our government do the translation job of the scary part for the US…and go and find yourself a translator, a specialized accountant and lawyer, and grow their pockets so that they can grow the Canadian economy on our back…
OUR government is now filtering out the basis of what they have already in the IGA….So that they can say later. “We warned you”
I am furious, this is a blatant trahison by our government…
My reading of the Ombudsman’s blurb is simple: we’re about to be thrown under the figurative bus. For months, Canadian taxpayers have cut cheques to Kevin Shoom to do nothing more than funnel paper into a circular file cabinet. Even his B.A. made him a bit overqualified to be the Conservative’s FATCA janitor.
So, if this is the way they want to play it then how about we all get ready to climb aboard a real bus as soon as the IGA is announced and head to Ottawa for a rally? Remember, you only get one chance to make a first impression, and for most Canadians it really will be their first as far as FATCA is concerned.
I love the smell of fresh Charter challenges and class action suits in the morning!
Last Fall I wrote to J. Paul Dube, Taxpayers’ Ombudsman regarding a upcoming conference in early November, 2012 that was held in NYC. Like the October, 2013 conference, he will be on a panel with Nina Olson.
This is the response I received:
Thank you for your October 4, 2012 email.
In preparing for the ABA tax Enforcement Conference I have been reading materials produced by the Taxpayer Advocate Service, particularly with respect to the Foreign Bank Account Report (FBAR) and the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) and note that Nina Olsen and her staff are working on the issues you raise. I must admit that these issues were not familiar to me and not within my mandate.
I will however communicate your concerns to Mrs. Olsen and offer any assistance my Office can provide to taxpayers in need of information.
