*It was the expat absentee ballots in Florida that decided the election in favor of Bush over Gore by about 500 votes, thus deciding the majority of the Electoral College. This was several years back as you probably will remember. It took counts and recounts of that vote before the decision was confirmend by the Supreme Court.
The Miami Herald, which supported Gore, later conducted its own very thorough investigation and concurred with the Supreme Court’s decision.
Absentee votes are sent. The candidates lost their opportunity to influence their own vote—ignorance, arrogance. The media passed it by–ignorance, arrogance. The opportunity for a real discussion in the media or campaign is gone. Getting the current administration out (if it could actually happen) could now only be revenge. Time to look at litigation. Where, how?
Interesting, but I’m surprised she didn’t mention anything about taxes.
Can’t stomach either candidate. The video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5foXDWnv18&feature=player_embedded of the Democrat fundraiser ‘Charles Adams, co-chairman of Americans Abroad for Obama
and member of the National Finance Committee of the Obama Campaign’ touting the need for FATCA and excusing the effects on ordinary individuals abroad, made me sick to my stomach. Deciding what to do with the toxic absentee ballot. I can’t even look at it. I think Victoria’s suggestion was a good one. Can’t find it now, but something to do with turning it in blank? Or can I just write”You’ve stolen my family savings. I vote for NO more FUBARs and FATCA fundraising” on it?
I almost fell out of my seat when I heard the latest NPR podcast on last-minute election news, and towards the end of the show a caller CALLED IN AND MENTIONED FATCA, FBAR, and the distress caused among overseas Americans.
Neil Conan and the other presenters had absolutely NOOO idea what this guy was talking about but they promised to look into it. They were totally confused and there was a long embarrassed silence…
Unfortunately in the 2 minutes allotted to his call he was unable to scratch the surface and I think he could have done a better job at expressing more of the injustice and heartbreak going on overseas.
So I have sent a mail to Mr Conan at “Talk of the Nation” show via the NPR contact form asking him to please make good on his comment that he will indeed look into this issue. I hope others will do the same!
Just so you will know, that Talk of the Nation show also got posted on another thread. You can start reading the entire comment thread here.
I too followed up with the NPR Contract form, and posted a comment that never came out of moderation. I know Mark Twain who was the caller also did. Thanks for posting it here too.
Keep looking for those opportunities to educated the uninformed journalist of NPR!
