‘As mentioned in our call (bubblebusin’s husband), IRS is a budget issue, given the large amount of funds potentially payable to the US Government by Canadians; the effect on many self-employed people and entrepreneurs of compliance with these rules; and the damage to bilateral trade and commerce should the Americans make FBAR compliance and issue relevant to trans-border activity.
You may want to make a Pre-2013 Budget Submission to the Finance Committee, if only to get the matter onto their agenda.
Finance Committee of the House of Commons: Deadline-Aug 3, 2012 for initial submission (elaboration may be provided thereafter)
Go to the Finance Cttee website-“Pre-Budget Consultations”. Complete the 5 questions, which, among other things, advise the Committee how the proposed project may advance the Conservative Government’s priorities of the promoting economic growth and jobs.

Last year, the Finance Committee received over 400 submissions. Only 100 groups were invited to present. The proponents should clearly identify their interest in presenting their case to the Committee. A brief submission is more likely to be read than a long one. The deadline of Aug 3 is critical, even if more information has to be provided later-at least answer the 5 questions!
Should you proceed, John would back you up with a submission to the Minister of Finance in the Fall.’
If I am fortunate enough to have Mr Weston back me up with a submission made directly to the Minister of Finance, I would REALLY appreciate it if all Canadian Brockers help me craft something that best expresses our concerns.
Please use the link to the questions, and post here any comments that would be relevant to any of the questions.
@Bubblebustin’: Yes, please DO quote me. You can even borrow my uniform. I would offer to lend you my sword, but I don’t think they would let you into Parliament with it.
Hopefully then pen will prove mightier ;-), but thanks!
PS Blaze
What size are you (for British army uni fitting purposes)? 🙂
*I am working on this. Tommorrow hopefully
@Tim, I think I’m almost done. Will you be submitting directly to the Finance Committee?
@Tim, that is, almost done with the help I’ve gotten here so far…
@Bubblebustin: I must confess. My Brock uniform actually belongs to a friend who does historical reeanctments, including of the War of 1812. He has lent it to me for our noble cause, but I’m sure he would not mind me passing it on to you for this momentous occasion. I’m not sure of the exact size (no tag inside), but I would say it is is probably a medium.
In addition to the uniform and sword, he offered to lend me his musket. I didn’t take it due to my strong opposition to guns. That should definitely prove I am not a “US person!”
*Yes, I will submit directly but I will also post everything here. I feel like I am doing an essay in college again having to answer those five questions.
*I want to try to get something up either tommorrow or Monday so others can get some ideas and perhaps make their own submissions.
*A couple initial thoughts. I am completely in agreement with Petros that the US should provide an accounting of how much tax is collected from Canadian residents on Canadian source income. I am not going to explicitly use the term “withdraw” in terms of the US Canada tax treaty but I am also going to call strongly for “Renegotiation.” An additional area will discuss the FATCA IGA’s and why they are bad.
*I wanted to post this on this thread too becasue I think it is relevant.
*I had considered posting a follow up on Canadians for Tax Fairness after the group was featured on CBC Power and Politics. However after watching the segment I have come to the conclusion that in reality most Canadian MP’s(and most included most of the members of the Finance Committee) don’t really understand citizenship based taxation, FATCA, tax havens or really anything we discuss here. Those who do understand are those MP’s such as Weston, Savoie, Crowder, Atamenko, Williamson etc. who have lots of USP’s as constituents(lots as in over 20%).
While I was hoping the Finance Committee after myself and Bubblebustin’s submissions would take a look at this issue after watching MP’s Brison, Mai, and Cathy Mcleod last night on CBC they are basically all out of it on this issue and the whole tax haven issue in general. I have to say a part of me did want to go on the attack as Canadians for Tax Fairness is associated with some really nasty people to our cause such as Richard J Murphy. However it was pretty clear that Hoang Mai and Scott Brison have no real idea who Richard Murphy is or what Tax Justice Network is or anything like that.
