A friend just returned from Halifax. They told him his application was a “slam dunk.”
Born in the U.S. parents moved him back to Canada as a teenager and he’s been here ever since.
They also told him it would be 2 to 6 months. Hope that applies to all of us.
Johnnb… Can you give us more details on this story. Did your friend comply with taxes or did he just renounce. I was born in the U.S. with Canadian parents and lived there for only 6 months. I want out if it is that easy but I don’t believe it is.
We will only know for sure if this is as easy as it sounds when the application has been approved in Washington and sent back to the US consulate in Halifax.
Let us all hope and pray that it is as simple and sure at the Consular officer has indicated. But meanwhile we are all keeping our fingers crossed bcause until you have this certificate in your hand….. As they used to say, “there’s many a slip between the cup and the lip.”
He lived in the U.S. about 17 years and then his parents brought him back to Canada. I think one of them was Canadian. they were getting nervous about the draft in the early sixties. he applied for Canadian citizenship when he turned 21 and became a citizen in1967 so he also signed a renunciation paper at the same time. He never sent anything to state so border guards for the past few years have been telling him he is a U.S. citizen. He got worried and decided to get a CLN by informing State that he relinquished in ’67.
He did nothing about taxes, didn’t have a U.S. passport or any other involvement with the U.S. his experience in Halifax was very positive.
I agree that until he gets his CLN nothing is for sure.
I am in an almost identical situation as your friend and have begun the relinquishment process today. The first problem is in getting an appointment. There appears to be nothing open for all of 2012! I’ve e-mailed them for help and am awaiting instructions.
@Bruce: I had the same problem but in an email the Consulate said they released new time slots on Fridays. When I checked on a Friday there were three slots for the end of January and we immediately took two. My advice would be to log in tomorrow to their web site and see if they’ve opened any new ones.
Thanks very much, johnnb. I’ve just called and left a message so, hopefully, they will return my call. I’ve gotten two e-mail replies but they are form letters and basically just say to check various websites…which I have, countless times!
