UPDATE: Comments will no longer be nested. Please use the @ sign to reply to someone. If you want to quote a part of what they say, please use the the following html code <blockquote> to begin the quote, </blockquote> to end it (if you can remember).
Should we have a one column comment stream or have the ability to “reply” to a post. This has created a small amount of confusion because people apparently don’t realize that they must go to the first comment in the thread to reply.
It requires when replying to a comment that people use “@username” in order to avoid confusion.
Simple chronological order would be easier to follow.
I think the only way to clean up comments is to show a tree structure (I think like the site ancestry com. There should be a wordpress plugin to do that. But in the long-run, I think it’s still a little tricky keeping up with all the comments.
It is tricky keeping up with all the comments. Jack Townsend just changed to a reply to “post”, and I now am having a hard time finding the newest comment as it could be back up in the middle of the pack, where in the past, it was just at the bottom of the list of posts.
For the original comment post, it might be better for them to see the answer they were looking for, but me just coming on the blog and trying to find the newest comment it is more difficult.
Maybe I will get used to it, and still weighing the advantages and disadvantages in my mind.
What I would like, is a monthly like drop down (along with the calendar you have) which just lists all the Articles in date order, for quick scan through when looking for an older post. I find that useful for me on Jacks blog.
“It is tricky keeping up with all the comments.”
Indeed it is, and after I posted this morning and came back to look at comments I missed your lovely note which you sent in what was my morning and must have been your night. So here is a belated “thank you” and a quick bisou for your kind words, sir. 🙂
@Victoria: You are welcome, but I have no idea which comment you are referring to. Here is a trick: every comment has a “permalink” found right under the name nestled in the date. Copy that link into a comment and then there is no question which comment you are responding to. With WordPress, these permalinks actually work to take you directly to the comment. Cheers, Peter
Great news! Thank You
Two suggestions. (1) The “Recent Comments” listing is a handy way to update on what is new, and would be handier if set to display a greater number (as a dropdown if possible). (2) Right column space might be pruned? Example: I never use tags.
@usx thanks. Comments is max. 15. So there’s no need to move the tags for now (which I could put at the bottom of the page.
