How to "get back" at the IRS
I will never forget reading in late 2010 about the situation of the Canadian-Americans and many Americans living in Europe: to become compliant with the IRS and US Gov, they had to hand over large portions of their life savings to America, a country that provided them with zero benefits living in their host countries. I thought this “criminal” on the part of the IRS to sneak-in with such a thing. This has contributed to at least 60% of my decision to renounce because I want nothing to do with countries that engage in such under-handed behavior.
Why does citizenship really matter (other than creating a mechanism to be taxed)
Came across the following article today:
Former Canadian Prime Minister John Turner is dual citizen. So too are Canadian politicians: Stephane Dion, Thomas Mulclair, David Alward, and (according to the Government of Canada site) Green Party Leader and MP Elizabeth May was born in the U.S. Why does citizenship matter in the first place? US Citizens in Australia: The IRS can have you extradited!
If you’re a US citizen in Australia, you’ve probably already heard about this case. The case involves Larry Williams, an American futures trader, who was apprehended in Australia. The IRS alleged that he had evaded taxes to the tune of 1,5+ million.

I finally found something: IRS extradites Americans abroad!
After commenting many times that I would like to see a case where the US Government / IRS actually went after Americans living overseas, I finally found something. The story (dated 2009) is here: http://ticotimes.com/costa-rica/irs-goes-after-us-income-expats-in-costa-rica
A Word about Politicians
I don’t know about any of you but when I first heard about FATCA and IRS enforcement efforts against Americans abroad, my first reaction was to think that they were simply blissfully unaware of the consequences. Never attribute malevolence, I thought, to what can easily be explained by ignorance.
A second response to Barrie McKenna
Petros responds to Barrie McKenna’s comment at Isaac Brock.
Doing nothing about your IRS obligations is a viable option, as long as you know the risks. I’ve made that quite clear. What I’ve tried to do is offer a little of the very expensive CA advice — for free. Take it or leave it.
