From the archives: Dialogue with brave Jim_in_Houston
From the archives of the Righteous Investor, December 4, 2011. Petros dialogues with a right-winger; it seems that few US residents, whether on the left or on the right, are sympathetic with the plight of Americans abroad and the masses of expats renouncing their citizenship.
American Presidents Speak About Canada
Petros asked me to put this these quotes I posted elsewhere as an independent thread.
These quotes from various US Presidents show how the relationship between Canada and US has evolved.
Today’s IRS has completely lost the “nine parts good will and common sense” Harry Truman spoke about or Ronald Reagan’s “spirit of cooperation.” It seems IRS still harbors the attitude of John Adams (“Canada must be ours. Quebec must be taken.”) and Thomas Jefferson (“The acquisition of Canada this year, as far as the neighborhood of Quebec will be a mere matter of marching.”

“FBAR – One Small Step For Man, A Giant Step For Mankind!”
All great advances in civilization spawn new industries. FBAR has spawned “FBAR Lawyers”, “FBAR Historians” and “FBAR Scholars“. When history is written, 2011 will be remembered as the “year of the FBAR.” In 1983 Time Magazine made a computer the “man of the year”. Perhaps for 2011, the FBAR should be regarded as the “man of the year”. In 2011, tax lawyer Phil Hodgen, recognized the importance of FBAR in an excellent post titled:
Notice to Swiss Authorities: Canada resists US extraterritorial tax policies, Switzerland must too
Canada appears to be putting up significant resistance in order to protect its citizens and residents according to its own charter of rights and democratic principles of fairness and justice. The continuing Canadian experience in this struggle ought to serve as a model for Switzerland’s (and other nation’s) necessary attempts to do the same.

Miranda Rights, FBAR, and the IRS’s Offshore Voluntary Disclosure
This is a thought experiment regarding the Miranda Rights and how they might properly apply to OVDI and FBAR. If a big boy says to a little boy at school, “Give me your lunch money or I will clobber you on your way home today.” The teacher sees the little boy hand the money over to the big boy. The big boy says to the teacher: “He gave it to me voluntarily.”

New Regulations Clarify How Non-US Banks Will Find And Report US Customers To The IRS: guest post
The Isaac Brock Society does not endorse tax professionals. However, I have been able to provide the following content, with permission, from Moodys LLP, tax advisors blog. It provides a useful summary of what FATCA will require the FFIs to do to detect the accounts of US persons.

Interesting Globe and Mail Articles on Taxes in Canada
There have been two interesting articles in the past few days in the Globe and Mail about taxes in Canada. The tone of both of these is so completely different from the tone we’ve seen from IRS. I think this is a reflection of the greater respect CRA gives to its taxpayers–although neither article was written by CRA.
