  1. I don’t get CTV News channel and it is behind a paywall. It looks like news.google.com will work for it but I’m not sure.

  2. Thanks for letting us know Tricia. This is a great opportunity for John Richardson to continue educating about FATCA. I’m eternally grateful for his info session in Vancouver some time back. It really helped clear the path for me.

  3. If you need to access CTV from outside of Canada, you’ll need a VPN (www.vpnuk.net). I watch CTV / CBC from outside of Canada all the time.

The VPN is £5.99 per month, no contract and can sign up for a one off 30 days. In addition, you can access TV from many other countries including UK, Australia, the US, France, and Germany for example..

  4. Video may show up on the CTV website tomorrow…maybe. Likely still won’t be accessible to those outside Canada.

  5. Way to go John Richardson! I ESPECIALLY liked his repetitive use of the words “US Taint” or “Tainted with US Citizenship.” Thanks for this high profile exposure.

  6. Usually we have managed to get these on the Brock YouTube site. Will post if/when it is up.
John got tons in in that 4 minutes!

  7. John is on between 31:35 and 36:00. He did great. Thanks for posting the mp3 URL, Tricia. I thought I wouldn’t be able to catch this because of the locks on everything.

  8. Thanks, Tricia, for the link so we could listen. And, again, to John for aceing the four-minute education clips on TV media for Canadians, both those with and without the US-taint.

  9. Yes, Tricia, he packed a lot in the few minutes he had. It was great to see him on TVI especially liked how he refuted the common notion that duals only pay a slight difference of taxes between the two countries. He explained how the “US citizenship” taxes will ruin people’s ability to save for retirement, for example, by taxing capital gains on a house that would be tax-free in Canada.

  10. The capital gain tax on a home really hit home for me. That will make people pay attention to the hideous extent of the US’s overreach when it’s known as such an important part of Canadian asset building. Thanks for bringing it up, John.

  11. Guys, you’ll be happy to know the segment has been caught by our resident expert and will be posted on Brock YouTube shortly, after a small bit of tidying. I will post the link when it’s there.

  12. Thank you, Tricia, for the head’s up on this earlier today. Thank you again to John for another excellent interview. As also mentioned above, he quickly and effectively refuted the faulty information given to the host by an American ambassador (!) — that is, the notion that since taxes are higher in Canada, then you likely wouldn’t owe any tax to the U.S. Excellent to mention the difficulty of retirement planning resulting from capital gains taxes owed to the U.S. for one’s Canadian home, and confiscatory complications if investing in Canadian mutual funds. In introducing the topics at the start of this show, I think the host used the term “toxic liability” in referring to U.S. citizenship and taxation.

  13. How about capital gains tax on a house that was 90% paid for by a born in Canada Canadian who married a “accidental American” late in life? That would be my situation. Married at age 41, my house was almost paid off. Once married, now I would have to pay US capital gains on it because of my wife? God dam ridiculous!

  14. Great. Get the information out there whenever possible.
Pity that the journalist never asked, the most obvious question:
What attempts are being made to change or challenge this dreadful situation? (Charter trial, lawsuit etc.)
May I also suggest that anyone speaking about FATCA and citizenship-based taxation to the media, ends every interview with a challenge:
“I challenge any U.S. official, ambassador or even the President of the United States to publicly defend the consequences of both FATCA and citizenship-based taxation on the expat American community.” as well as:
“I also challenge the current Canadian government to publicly justify allowing the devastating consequences of U.S. citizenship-based taxation, encouraged through their having signed on to FATCA, to continue hurting Canadian citizens and residents and assisting in removing funds from the Canadian economy.”
If John Richardson would have said that in his interview, he would have put the government on the spot and, at the same time, made everyone aware that there is a lawsuit and that the Charter is being violated.
We need to think strategically and keep the government on the defensive at all times! Since FATCA and citizenship-based taxation is indefensible, the Canadian government needs to have that put in front of them as much as possible. Especially in the media!

  15. Great work, John! It was FABULOUS to see our issue discussed on prime-time TV! I imagine there were some OMG moments around a few dinner tables last night. Bit by bit the word will out!
