Updated Petition — Is it time to assist MPs in their efforts for Question Period in Canada’s Parliament with Updated Petition?

I’m passing on a comment that came from Kathy this morning to get feedback / help on getting the Canadian petition below updated and sent to a specific MP for use in Question Period regarding the implementation of Canada’s FATCA IGA.

SHOULD THIS PETITION EFFORT BE UPDATED? (Former Petition to Canadian Government re FATCA in Canada — Print, Sign, Send to MP Ted Hsu ASAP — RIGHT AWAY!)

@calgary411

Just talked to my MP and he suggested to keep the petitions coming as the issue needs floor time discussion and petitions are a way of getting that time. Do we need a new version now that the Conservatives have already agreed to the IGA? How quickly can we do this?

  1. I’ve got a bunch of people living and working near me willing to sign as soon as this gets updated. I hear that it’s better to have around the 25 minimum on each petition than to put hundreds on one petition as EACH petition means a certain amount of time on the floor.

  2. That’s great, Kathy. Who is your MP; what is his/her party affiliation? Does he/she have a suggested petition wording that we can / should use (that was provided for the previous petition from Ted Hsu’s office)? Re signatures, 4 to each petition page, as per the instructions for the previous petition. It was emphasized that directions followed to the “T” or petition page would be rejected:

PRINT PETITION PAGE — Petition to Canadian Government FATCA

    SIGN THE PETITION
Note: SIGN, do not print your name

You must include your full address (printed) including postal code.

Only “hard” copies with original signatures are accepted; do not submit electronically, do not scan, etc.

THEN, GET AS MANY OTHER SIGNATURES AS YOU CAN (limit of four (4) ORIGINAL signatures to a page. Each page must be printed exactly as the link and signature spaces provided; for additional signatures complete new page, etc.)

SEND SIGNED PETITION PAGE(S) to MP Ted Hsu XXXXXXXXX directly:

  3. @ calgary411

Guelph’s MP is Frank Valeriote. He’s Liberal (in a sea of Conservative blue here in Southern Ontario). Hoping to get a bit more info from his office about the petitions. I’ll forward the current version once I get in touch with the right person there. Hopefully they can provide some help. Anybody here have any suggestions on what we should update on the petition?

  4. Thanks, Kathy.

I’ve corresponded with Atticus and she will contact her MP, Ted Hsu, tomorrow. (He’s also Liberal.) His was the office that helped so much with the last petition. Mr. Hsu was very thorough. We waited for answers that never came for all of Q121 (MP Ted Hsu and Q127 (MP Scott Brison). Canadian Parliament FATCA Questions 121 and 127 – Oct 25,28 2013

Here is the latest on timing, which is running out: https://isaacbrocksociety.ca/2014/04/03/peggy-nash-ndp-calls-for-debate-of-fatca-in-house-of-commons/comment-page-1/#comment-1362385

  5. If the new petition page can be ready before Monday, I can take some printed copies to Joe Oliver’s appearance at the Canadian Club at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto. Maybe some of the attendees will be willing to sign it.

I already have prepared my sign. It asks “Why is a U.S. Law (FATCA) HIDDEN in Canada’s Budget Bill??”

  6. AnonAnon,

That would be great if it can happen quickly.

We should hear back from Atticus — she was going to contact MP Ted Hsu’s office this morning to get some guidance or how it should be worded, etc.
