It’s Time For A Second Canadian Anti-Fatca Protest ! UPDATE! Parliament Hill – Oct 16th!

FATCA Protest, Parliament Hill, October 16, 2013FATCA Fact Sheet       Anti-FATCA Slogans    Protest Press Release

AtticusinCanada has received an official permit to protest on Parliament Hill Oct. 16, 2013,  from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.!  We will meet at 9 a.m. in front of Parliament Hill and proceed to the Hill itself once we have a reasonably sized group. Families and even children are welcome if you feel they are old enough!  We ask that everyone bring their own sign. A good idea would be to email AtticusinCanada with the slogans you would like to use, so we have as few duplicates as possible.

The  mini-protest in Ottawa on Sept 9, 2013, garnered some well needed media attention. Just imagine how much  we could achieve if  more Brockers  joined forces for a larger protest at parliament hill this fall!

Many of us believe that a formal announcement of an IGA for FATCA is just around the corner. It’s time to ramp up with the push back. The letter writing and emailing to our elected representatives has been great, and some illuminating articles have been written by Lynne and Victoria, but we need to do more.

Atticusincanada and I would like to be the drivers towards organizing a larger protest, but first we need to gather enough participants. For those Brockers who can commit to coming to Ottawa for a day, and would like to join us, please email Atticusincanada at atticusincanada@gmail.com.

  1. @the Animal

    This is your opportunity!

    @AtticusinCanada

I have to make a trip by car ferry to the Lower Mainland when I go and thought about carry a placard with me and how it might attract attention, then thought, isn’t that what I’d like to do? Consider the trip as ‘value added”, lol!

  2. I would strongly encourage a couple of mom’s or dad’s or both to take advantage of the upcoming opportunities at Ryerson in TO, and in Vancouver!

CanadianGirl, you rock! There are some sample sign slogans posted here at IBS – can’t recall which post. Also feel free to use the same slogans that Atticus and I used if you like. I am looking forward to reading about the 2nd Fatca protest in Canada!

    Go moms and dads Go!

  3. Everyone – all attempts to clear or cover my schedule today have come up empty. I’m so sorry to have let all of you down! I was able to get my signs made, so I’m ready for the next opportunity.

  4. @canadiangirl

You’ll be that much more prepared for that next time – and not alone. Thank you for the attempt.

  5. Having allowed myself to be caught up arguing with people such as SR, and David L, I am aware how much this distracts me from the task at hand. We all know the threat is real. No one is in denial here about that. Just how it will play out, is anyone’s educated guess, but people like SR and David L. both thrive on the fear – albeit possibly for different reasons: SR because he enjoys seeing others squirm, and David L. because our fear means more money in his pocket.

A few days ago, there was a flurry of posts regarding where to protest next, what to put in a handout, how to get better organized, which politician to talk to next, etc. Lets not let the SRs and David L.s of the world throw us off course. We have lots of work to do to kill FATCA in Canada (and elsewhere), regardless whether we get compliant or not, and whether we renounce or not – neither of which should dull our passion.

  6. Right you are WhiteKat. It’s a common tactic to toss out shiny objects or in this case pieces of snit to make you step off the pathway of positive action. Focus, focus, focus on the positive action and try to ditch the fear.

  7. Just to make things clearer. I believe WhiteKat IS focused on positive action. My comment was made in a more general sense. I’ve got a small hometown “action” going on but it’s not enough so I’ve started thinking about a way to make a portable placard which I can take to the big city if the opportunity arises. There’s so many good slogans out there though that it’s hard to pick just one. Focus, focus, focus Em!

  8. WhiteKat, there was someone posting on the Americans in Canada FB page today trying to drum up business by saying that “quiet disclosure” was a mistake. I posted a response. These vultures are everywhere and they are distracting. But sometimes, you have to say something. And it doesn’t hurt to have discussions and debates because these things can help us formulate, refine/perfect our talking points. Just think of it as practice for media moment.

There is still upside b/c Canada still doesn’t have an IGA and as long as we don’t, there is time. Eventually we will figure out the best ways to attract attention, spread the word and someone (hopefully more than one) in the govt is going to listen and act. For all we know, someone is behind the scenes acting right now.

  9. @NorthernShrike,

Welcome to the Ottawa Brockers group! Your suggestion to use public library meeting rooms is a good one.

  10. Yoga-girl: Saw your comment on FB. I back-filed 7 years worth of returns myself in 2011 and did not hear a peep from IRS. But I called the Philly office (the International tax office) a year later, and they said my returns were fine. I called them again 2 weeks ago just before I went to renounce, and again they said they were fine. I included the CRA summary (the thing they mail back after you file) with my US 1040 as a verification of Canada tax paid. So in my case quiet disclosure worked.

  11. kermitzii, I think it probably does for most people, which is why that post of FB pissed me off. Some vulture trying to scare people into paying him to do something they can easily do themselves and is most likely not going to amount to any sort of censure.

  12. Thanks for bringing this up as I think I am just going to quiet file. I don’t fit well into Streamlined at all.

As for the protest. I have applied for a permit for Parliament Hill. Email me for when and to get updates. atticus in canada at gmail dot com.

  13. Just a reminder. I sent out several emails today regarding a near future protest in Ottawa. If you did not hear from me with the details but, would like to then please send me an email.

  14. @Calgary,

This doesn’t sound good! I wish we had known about this before – no time to organize a protest now!

  15. yup
