Obama Campaign Sues to Restrict Military Voting

Breitbartby Mike Flynn 2 Aug 2012
President Barack Obama, along with many Democrats, likes to say that, while they may disagree with the GOP on many issues related to national security, they absolutely share their admiration and dedication to members of our armed forces. Obama, in particular, enjoys being seen visiting troops and having photos taken with members of our military. So, why is his campaign and the Democrat party suing to restrict their ability to vote in the upcoming election?…

Obama campaign sues Ohio over military voting
Fifteen military groups are opposing a federal lawsuit in Ohio brought by President Barack Obama’s campaign because they say it could threaten voter protections afforded to service members. Obama’s campaign and Democrats argue the law unfairly ends in-person voting for most Ohioans three days earlier than it does for military and overseas voters. They say such disparate treatment is unconstitutional, and all voters should be able to vote on those days. Organizations including AMVETS asked a judge late Wednesday to dismiss the lawsuit. They say federal and state law recognizes military voters need extra time. They fear a court could find that service members shouldn’t be treated differently. Most Ohioans have until Friday evening before Election Day to cast a ballot in person. Military voters have until Monday.

Hey Obama, what about “equal treatment” with day care, medicare, unemployment benefits, income taxes, property or even retirement savings?  Maybe this explains why certain interests don’t want for expats to be able to easily vote at their local base or consulate.   Under the concept of “equality”, why can’t all voters have the option of voting “in person”?

  1. “Most Ohioans have until Friday evening before Election Day to cast a ballot in person”.

Don’t people in Ohio get to vote “in person” on election day?  Am I missing something?

  2. I think this might be the usual political posturing and mischaracterization of what is happening.  I read this tonight as a counter-balance to the charge

This certainly sounds outrageous, but it is not true. Since 2005, Ohio has had in person early-voting in the three days prior to the election. This year, however, the Republican legislature in Ohio eliminated early voting during this period, except for members of the military. The Obama lawsuit is attempting to restore voting rights for all Ohioans, not restrict them for the military or any other group. From the Obama lawsuit, filed in federal court:

Plaintiffs bring this lawsuit to restore in-person early voting for all Ohioans during the three days prior to Election Day – a right exercised by an estimated 93,000 Ohioans in the last presidential election. Ohio election law, as currently enacted by the State of Ohio and administered by Defendant Ohio Secretary of State, arbitrarily eliminates early voting during the three days prior to Election Day for most Ohio voters, a right previously available to all Ohio voters.

The Obama campaign’s request for a preliminary injunction does not seek to restrict military voting. Rather, it simply is asking that the full early voting period be open to all citizens, as it was under the law before this year.

Even Fox News acknowledges the purpose of the suit, noting “the lawsuit does not restrict the ability of military personnel to cast their ballots early.”

  3. That explains it a bit better, but I still don’t understand the fuss about military personnel being given a few days extra time since they might be out in the field where they can’t vote.  Everyone having a few extra days doesn’t sound that bad either, but I’d bet that military personnel are a generally bit more restricted and limited than civilians.
