House Defeats Motion Supporting Levin’s Latest Misguided Attack on Tax Havens

Just a quick note to draw attention to CF & P article yesterday, by Andrew Quinlan

“While the two chambers of Congress work to reconcile the differences between their respective transportation bills, CF&P continues to monitor an unrelated tax provision known as the “Stop Tax Haven Abuse Act” that was slipped into the Senate version by Sen. Carl Levin, a frequent source of anti-tax haven demagoguery. The Act would grant the Treasury Department new powers under the Patriot Act to compel foreign banks to perform the duties of the IRS by enforcing US tax law, while punishing those who do not sufficiently satisfy Treasury’s demands to enforce America’s counter-product worldwide tax system.Read more…..

  1. …CF&P last month educated members on the likely consequences of enacting Levin’s legislation, and provided this information again this week. Apparently the lessons took, as the motion was defeated 192-226.

Perhaps education of those Congress critters is taking hold and they could also see the detriment of continuing down the FATCA road?

  2. An excerpt from the Colbert Report this week: “According to a recent study by the Sunlight Foundation, Congress is getting dumber. What does that mean? After analyzing speeches, their research found that these politicians are speaking at the level expected of a sophomore in high school when, seven years ago, they were performing at junior levels.”

Making Congress smarter will be working against the tide, it seems.

Can anyone tell me how to get new subject posts sent to my email? Petros said to go to subscribe box on Brock’s new main page but I don’t see anything there resembling subscribe (but then I am a technophobe who’s afraid of breaking the ‘internets’).

  3. Looks like the 4th and 6th boxes down from the top on the right hand side of the page are where you subscribe but I don’t understand why there are two places to do it. But let me warn you bubblebustin, IF you choose the wrong box you will indeed break the internets. 😉

  4. @Em, it looks like I already broke it because all I see there is the search and recent comments in those places. What am I doing wrong :-/

  5. @bubblebustin…

Apparently, for reasons unknown to me, the boxes only show up for those not logged in.  So log off, and you will see them.  I just logged out to check, and there is a Notify me of followup comments email check box now showing up.

  6. I think Petros’s kitty might be playing with the keyboard. It will all sort itself out I’m sure.

  7. Thank you @justme & em, I tried what you suggested, @justme and apparently I already subscribe. I guess I’ll have to show more patience and wait for the puddy tat  to fix it 🙂

All of a sudden the subscription manager below started working. Rome was not built in a day and I suppose blogs aren’t either. Thank you Petros.

  8. Yesterday, Rep. Doggett offered a non-binding motion to instruct the House conferees to accept the Senate’s anti- tax haven language. As part of our ongoing mission to promote tax competition and defend financial privacy, CF&P last month educated members on the likely consequences of enacting Levin’s legislation, and provided this information again this week. Apparently the lessons took, as the motion was defeated 192-226

Wow, I had no idea Doggett was still in Congress. He’s the guy who sputtered that quote about ” the scoundrel who renounces his American citizenship” way back in 1996 when they were debating the exit tax.

  9. Yes, it is a good victory – & while margin is fairly narrow, there’s enough that future decision points MAY also break in the favorable direction.

But – “Eternal Vigilance is the Price of Liberty” – this was just ONE attempt to retain this “Stowaway”!  There will no doubt be MORE attempts to get it thru – probably they’ll keep trying ’til they get lucky & not enough people are watching!

What a ROTTEN bunch & system!

  10. Just heard this from ACA…
