During a panel discussion on Tuesday’s NBC Today about philanthropist Denise Rich renouncing her U.S. citizenship to reportedly avoid paying taxes, advertising executive Donny Deutsch used the incident to proclaim: “We are a country that is at class warfare now. It is reality. And this is the kind of thing that if I’m home watching, I go, screw you, get out of my country!”
NBC chief medical editor Nancy Snyderman had a similar reaction as she denounced the ultimate sin for liberals, the wealthy not paying enough taxes: “I think this is despicable. I have no – nothing but contempt for Denise Rich trying to escape taxes….Anyone who turns down an American citizenship, It’s crap….It’s crap, it’s absolute crap.”

Apparently according to a NBC News story by Andrea Mitchell Chuck Schumer is STILL trying to get his Ex-Patriot Act passed although he is starting to run out of time before the election.
I used to respect Donny Deutsch, mainly for promoting entrepreneurship. Not any more. Not after seeing that. People of virtue should have freedom as their core value. He apparently does not. And thus misinterprets the situation.
Unlike many at IBS for 25 years I correctly filled all the required forms and paid my US taxes. During those entire 25 years was I telling my friends and family in the US how unjust it was, how it was taxation without representation, the reason behind the revolutionary war.
Over those 25 years the vast majority of people just didn’t want to hear it, and their response was always “well if you don’t like it then give up your citizenship”.
Well in 2010 I had finally had enough and I renounced. So what reaction do I get from those same people? They treat me like I am a traitor and tell me that I should just shut up because I am no longer a US person.
People just don’t care until they are the ones who are being unfairly victimized. Its like citizenship based taxation, its a fact of life. Get used to it, slave.
Yea, a funny thing happens in the US.
If you are still stateside and complain, you get “Love it or leave it”
So, you leave it. That phrase then turns into “Fuck you, asshole”.
*Funny, how come the IRS, knowing my situation suggested that I could solve it by renouncing? I have the letter.
I have to admit that the names “Nancy Snyderman” and “Donny Deutsch” especially gave me a bit of a laugh just now! I don’t know who any of these people on this panel were, but give some credit to the lawyer Star Jones who tried to defend Rich next to these two vicious people.
Also, did anyone else notice the same error in the this article that seems to be everywhere? Namely that Saverin supposedly became a Singaporean citizen? I bet that Saverin never does that, lest he get conscripted into the Singaporean army!

@Mark, the IRS are probably privately more sympathetic than many others because they’re aware of the dire problems but have their hands tied
*Funny. As more Americans and Green Card holders start to decide that maybe their lives might be better outside the USA …. and when new Immigrants begin to realize that maybe the USA is NOT the best place to “escape” into …. the aging US political and media establishment is going to realize they have a problem … neither young blood nor capital left to keep the wheels of industry turning to produce the Social Security, Medicaid and other ponzi payments going. Oh dear, what a shame. I keep saying that when you find bullets leaving your pistol and repeatedly hitting you in the foot the thing to do is to remove your finger from the trigger …… I pray for the day that the USA will return to its Constitutional roots.
@ Nervous investor: “remove your finger from trigger”… LOL. That’s too true. The US is cutting off its nose to spite its face. It’s “despicable” to relinquish your citizenship. So lets punish the relinquishers rather than dealing with the root problems and causes.
