Media and Blog Articles – Part 1 of 11 (to 26 May 2015)
You can access all years at this link:

EmBee suggested that it would be good if there was a thread for new articles, so that people would be aware of where to comment. So, I created this permanent page. You could mention such articles in the comment stream for this page, or if I see one on another thread, I can copy the link to here. I’ll keep adding to the list, but not deleting, so we’ll end up having sort of a “bibliography” too. [Note: Some articles are not open for comments]
For more articles on FATCA, enter FATCA into Google then click on the link “more news for fatca” just below the most recent featured article.
Note also: JC suggests to see #FATCA on Twitter for latest breaking news. JC finds that is quite a good source and there even are some international articles that one may read using Google Translate.” Others may help certain tweets and articles remain in elevated position by retweeting them.

@Pandora
What does he write? America is not keen to keep propping up failing banks? Is the UBS failing? As far as I know, it is thriving. And then he writes “After having been propped up” after the Wall Street fiasco. Whose fault was that? Moody gave triple A ratings to Lehman Brothers bonds 3 days before it collapsed! Man- what one-sided journalism.
Nigel Green gets it:
Obama’s War on Expats has tuned Americans abroad into “toxic citizens” with “leprosy-like status.”
Halleluya to Nigel Green! FIngers crossed for Bopp.
Halleluya! Its like a ray of light in this insanity. Like somebody finally really gets it!
FIngers crossed for Bopp.

Yet another article….

Well, this is interesting:
http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2014/06/12/tories_insist_changes_to_citizenship_act_will_respect_charter_constitution.html
From the mouth of Citizenship Minister Chris Alexander:
Alexander said: “There is a way of renouncing every citizenship. No one in our country can be forced to be a citizen of any country. And under the laws of Canada, citizenship can be renounced, either ours or those of other countries.”
“That might not resolve a difference of opinion with Tehran or other capitals who consider someone to be a citizen. But in our eyes,” Alexander said, the individual would be — as a Conservative senator suggested — assumed to be a citizen of Canada not subject to revocation of their Canadian passport.
Someone has already made a great comment:
“So every Canadian/US dual citizen who is being forced to expose thier financial banking information to the US Government can now say they renounce their US citizenship and can no longer be forced to disclose any banking information, nor can their bank disclose because, according to Alexander and the Harperites, they cannot be forced to be an American.”
@Kathy;
Re;
“….Alexander said: “There is a way of renouncing every citizenship. No one in our country can be forced to be a citizen of any country. And under the laws of Canada, citizenship can be renounced, either ours or those of other countries.”…”
So then, Alexander should be willing to intercede with the US and DEMAND that it allow Canadians like Calgary411’s son to renounce. US law will not allow those deemed legally incompetent to renounce/relinquish EVER. Will Alexander say that Canada ‘respects’ the sovereign right of the US to make its own citizenship laws to the same extent and nth degree that it has chosen to ‘respect’ their extraterritorial tax laws and FATCA?
@badger
That’s a wonderful point!! Calgary411 should definitely be following up on the Minister’s statement.
Thanks, badger and Kathy.
Other than my poor opinion of Alexander, I could ask if he would intercede in my son’s US citizenship renunciation. Of course, I am not willing to take the gamble to go through whatever process to get my son a US social security number so he can then file back US income tax returns, which require a SSN, and Foreign Bank Account Reports. I would not want the result of such a gamble to be that he still would not be able to renounce (or a parent, guardian or trustee on his behalf, which DOS says they can not do even with a court order).
Or, I may still go with the “expertise” of Mr. Keddy who tells us that US citizenship has to be APPLIED FOR, not automatic (contrary to what I am told by both a Washington, DC immigration/nationality lawyer and from the Department of State, Overseas Citizen Services, Legal Department). Of course, I could also ask Mr. Keddy to go to my bank with me to explain to them that ‘no, persons like my son are NOT US citizens’ and then I will ask him to contact the IRS on my behalf to have the income tax I paid on my son’s RDSP returned to me and to the Canadian treasury.

ExpatForum.com: US tax deadline looming, but many expats unaware of their obligations
Imagine that! How many more would be aware if the IsaacBrockSociety.ca crew hadn’t been banned and censored for what we were expressing at ExpatForum.com? What was “her” (our moderator’s) name again?
I wonder if my comment there will make it through the “moderation”:
@Calgary
The article says up till now the IRS has been “relatively lenient”. LENIENT?
Thats so amazing. Its like luring the sheep to slaughter. Not one word of caution.
My posts are going through with a delay- which is why they are double. Any reason for this?
No change on my end.
@Kathy, @Badger@Calgary………
Any idea where the full quote is located so we can feature it prominently. This is another important tool we have.
@Polly
Having problems viewing new comments since Friday. See the new comment on the right… but when I go to the comment… it is not there… need to refresh a few times before it appears… I cleared the cache.. … Sometimes it works… sometimes it don’t.
George, badger and Kathy and Interested Others:
I viewed and listened here: http://senparlvu.parl.gc.ca/Guide.aspx?viewmode=4&categoryid=-1¤tdate=2014-06-12&languagecode=12298&eventid=9569#, which is the Senate hearing where from which he is quoted.
Listen to MP Chris Alexander at about 39:35 (where, of course, he is discussing the Citizenship Bill C-24, terrorism, etc.) where he says:
Indeed, Polly. The spider and the fly comes to mind.

Someone in Quebec thinks that those residing permanently in Canada should contribute to the US Treasury, and that Canada should institute a CBT on Canadians living outside Canada – and that they should pay for Canadian services they can’t benefit from or access from abroad.

I arrived 2 days late to the comment party but BC_Doc got in early with a good one including a FATCA reference which ended up second in the thumbs up. Amazing how many articles not about FATCA per se can be used to introduce FATCA and even steer people towards stopfatca.ca. 😉
Ted Cruz has received his formal renunciation of Canadian citizenship – with far less trouble, expense and repercussions than the US poses to us.
http://globalnews.ca/news/1386725/ted-cruz-keeps-promise-to-give-up-canadian-citizenship/
Several news sites are now closed for comment, as the news is a few days old, but perhaps by doing a google news search there may be others where we can raise the issue of how the US holds people hostage and makes it so difficult to renounce, vs. Cruz’s experience with Canada.
