Media and Blog Articles
EmBee suggested that it would be good if there was a thread for new articles, so that people would be aware of where to comment. So, I created this permanent page. You could mention such articles in the comment stream for this page, or if I see one on another thread, I can copy the link to here. I’ll keep adding to the list, but not deleting, so we’ll end up having sort of a “bibliography” of FATCA/CBT articles. [Note: Some articles are not open for comments]
For more articles on FATCA, enter FATCA into Google then click on the link “more news for fatca” just below the most recent featured article.
Note also: JC suggests to see #FATCA on Twitter for latest breaking news. JC finds that is quite a good source and there even are some international articles that one may read using Google Translate.” Others may help certain tweets and articles remain in elevated position by retweeting them.
Be sure to read the comment stream for this thread — there are usually very recent articles mentioned there that aren’t on this list yet.

How we laughed. They have to all work together to collect taxes for the US. The other way round not so much.

Thanks for gathering all these links together. I’ll add them to the list.
Compliance condor Ronald Marini, in a TaxConnections blog, cites recent US FATCA court cases, then issues a warning to:
“WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE, PEPOLE – FATCA IS HERE TO STAY”.
https://www.taxconnections.com/taxblog/courts-not-sympathetic-to-fatca-challenges/#.V88iy_JTEUA
I have posted in reply: “Ronald Marini is partly correct.”
“Yes, there certainly is a smell coming out of the United States of America because of citizenship-based taxation and FATCA, but it’s not coffee.”

Responding to the same blog, Keith Redmond complained of comment censorship at TaxConnections. Kat Jennings replied to him how supportive her site is. I post this here as notice of my comment, since my comments critical of FATCA, CBT, etc. have all consistently been deleted at TaxConnections. We’ll see.
@Shovel
I posted a remark that my comments haven’t shown up in the past and received an email from Kat that they’ve been experiencing technical problems, but thanks to myself and others bringing it to their attention, the problem has now been fixed.
Comment away.
The perma-link for this article on 2016.09.05 “Tax commission reconvenes Tuesday to discuss delinking Guanm’s tax code from US” goes to a Reuters article about Obama instead. (And there’s a typo in “Guam’)

My new hero: Rep. Meadows (R-NC), along with his two Republican co-sponsors from South Carolina.
To quote Keith Redmond from the Citizenship Taxation Facebook page: Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC) has announced HR5935, which effectively calls for the repeal of FATCA. The bill is nearly identical to the Senate bill authored by Sen. Rand Paul in 2015 and is a step forward in the legislative process to repeal FATCA. With this bill, Rep. Meadows is making a strong statement in support of the privacy and constitutional rights of 9 million overseas Americans.
It’s now in the Ways and Means Committee.

Here is the full information about the bill. Note that the summary and full text are not yet available, but should be so in a day or two.

It really is all about the money with Schumer. Punish rich people who try to give up citizenship and push to accept anyone who can afford the green card.

My own opinion is of course you keep citizens by treating them good. You make things so good that rich people want to come here. He could do more to get money by just getting rid of his crazy rules.
@All
I have this name change suggestion to use commenting etc.
Change “FATCA” to “One-Way FATCA”
Re: my comment above.
TaxConnections now censors comments (without appearing to do so) by leaving them permanently in moderation.
AnonAnon: I’ve never smoked pot but I may as well have. I feel that poor man’s pain as I have been exiled from the US for over 5 years now and will continue to be for the foreseeable future unless and until our issue is dealt with.
If the Canadian Prime Minister had any guts he would ditch his diplomatic immunity and stand side by side with me and with this young man who have broken no reasonable law and are of no danger to their society or ours yet are being commonly treated like felons. I couldn’t help but notice the massive fee for obtaining a waiver of the denial of entry. Sound familiar?

George Washington, that great American first President, said *I cannot tell a lie.*
For US Persons Abroad / Americans and Canadians (and those from other countries), what is the present-day take on *I cannot tell a lie*? Present-day Presidential candidates in the US and leaders of other countries set examples for us all. What is right? What is wrong? What does it all mean?

The register says that the US tipped off the EU to go after apply. Kind of reminds me how everyone voted for Obama to stick it to the rich guy. Make the rich guy pay for the health insurance of the poor etc. Then they got their own bill and started to cry.

@AnonAnon & MuzzledNoMore
This case is a good demonstration that Canadians do not have a God-given right to enter the USA, and reminds me of Rob Ford being denied entry to the US due to his history of drug abuse.
Muzzled, if your 5 year exile from the US is out of principle, due to the US gov. attacking us, I fully respect that. If your exile is from fear of crossing the border (when you would really like to), the chances are that you would have no problems at the current time. I have crossed the border over ten times since 2010 (ie. Canadian passport with US place of birth) and have never had the slightest difficulty. I have never been told to get a US passport, as others have. These crossings include being totally unaware of FATCA and being very aware of FATCA (when I was admittedly a little nervous). Some of the border agents were even downright friendly! We just get the non-resident alien DHS stamp on our Canadian passport.
I know another “accidental American, dual at birth” (like myself) who continues to travel and vacation in the USA very frequently. She was told once to get a US passport a few years ago but ignored it and continues to have no problems.
I wonder if our US place of birth gives us an entry advantage in the minds of some US border agents (over born in Canada Canadians),as one of the rights of US citizenship is the right to enter the US (even though we may not consider ourselves real Americans).
@Mr. A.
Thanks for your perspective – it closely parallels my own real-world experience crossing the border since September 2011, when I first became aware of FATCA.
Most crossings (both by land and by air) have been quite uneventful and anticlimactic. Curiously, the only time I’ve ever been challenged at the border was in July 2011, just months before my OMG moment. I was travelling by car to Boston with my wife and daughter to attend one of my daughter’s dance competitions. We crossed at Ivy Lea in the Thousand Islands to I-81.
The border guard was quite pleasant as he asked us the usual questions : where are you from, where are you going, how long are you staying, and finally, what is your citizenship? We all answered “Canadian”, then handed him our passports. Suddenly his demeanour completely changed as he noticed the US place of birth on my passport. He said, “I’ll be back in a few minutes” in a very serious tone and took our passports into his booth. It was indeed several minutes before he came back out and brusquely
handed back our passports. He then looked at me right in my eyes and said, “I’ll let you through, but next time you say that you are American, and it will go a lot better for you and your family.” Too stunned to say anything except thank you, we headed on our way.
So, ever since then I’ve always hoped for the best, but braced myself for the worst, just in case. I hope I never have to explain to one of them that, despite what their little computer screen might say, I am no longer a US citizen, and have not been one since my 25th birthday in 1984 when I statutorily relinquished my US citizenship by failing to return to the US to establish permanent residency. Then the real fun will begin.
“All this worries the OECD’s tax-transparency crusaders. Pascal Saint-Amans, the club’s head of tax policy, was concerned enough to fly to Nassau last year to address the cabinet. “I told them if they play games they will lose. Their reputation will be hit,” he says.”
NO mention of the US. Reckon the OECD remains part of the “hypocrisy club”, not willing to bit the hand that feeds them.

@Charl
The OECD is the wannabe bully, subservient to the US, but quite willing to pick on smaller, weaker nations, especially former colonies. The world is just one big primary school playground and these cowards somehow think they’re God. Good on the Bahamas for standing its ground – too bad more countries don’t have the balls to do the same thing.
