Green Party of Canada Opposes FATCA

Today the Green Party of Canada issued both a FATCA media release and a background paper on FATCA.

As Winston Churchill said:

Finally we have a victory!

  1. Excellent.  I’ve just sent these links to many, many on my contact list, including all the government representatives I have previously corresponded with.

Good representation at the Toronto FATCA Forum and my thanks to the Green Party.

  2. *Put the IBS link on the Green Party FB page so that they can head over to check us out.  If the other guy is here on IBS…I feel for ya, bro.  πŸ™  It damned well sucks to be in that boat.  πŸ™

  3. @the Animal

I went to their Fb page and didn’t see your post. I also posted a thank-you with a link to the release and received a ‘like’, but now that’s gone too. Maybe they want to be the ones to break the news…

  4. @the Animal

Doh! I inadvertently went to the Green Party in the US, that’s why I didn’t see your post. They took mine down there though. I’ll try again, hehe.

  5. @bubblebustin,

You mistakenly posted the Canadian Green Party announcement to the US Green Party Facebook page??? Good on you!!! Too bad they didn’t see fit to keep it up there.

  6. @calgary411

Actually they did keep it, it was just pushed down the page and I didn’t see it. Anyway, it got posted twice by me!

  7. Twice — you are very good, bubblebustin. Thanks for all your very good work on behalf of so many!

  8. *I joined the Green party today. $50 dollar donation costs $12 after tax credit!.  Just to encourage them. Now if the NDP would say something I would vote for them since my Tory MP doesn’t respond.

  9. @calgary411

Thanks, but my redundant behaviour has more to do with error on my part πŸ™

Searches of ‘Green Party FATCA’ turns up zilch! Canadian media asleep at the wheel again.

  10. bubblebustin,

That’s what I mean; you’re good even when it was in error, double the awareness.

I was searching for something in the Canadian media too. Are they gagged? I did, however, get acknowledgements of receipt of the Green Party announcement links from Mike Sullivan, NDP MP and from Kevin Shoom (to whom we have been corresponding re comments on the potential Canadian IGA). Both thanked me for passing it on to them — Mike Sullivan sending it on to NDP critics and Kevin Shoom adding this to the submissions I have made re the Canadian IGA.

  11. Excellent work Calgary! Glad you thought to send to Kevin Shoom too! I’m going to fire it off to some of the locally circulated newspaper’s editors in my area. They’re pretty Green up here on the left coast.

  12. I recently received an e-mail bulletin from Elizabeth May’s office regarding the TPP but found therein an opportunity to comment on her FATCA submission so I did.

I posted under the name of Concerned Canadian as follows …

Thank you for making this submission regarding FATCA (Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act) which has the potential to cause harm to a million Canadian residents who have the misfortune of having a US connection. FATCA has been described as “the worst law most Americans have never heard of” and I dare say there are hundreds of thousands of unsuspecting Canadian residents who have not heard of it either. If our Canadian government agrees to enforce FATCA by way of an IGA (Inter-Governmental Agreement) then a new sub-class of Canadian residents will watch as the IRS virtually gains total informational access to their Canadian banking accounts. These accounts hold Canadian dollars which were legally earned, taxed and saved in Canada. The expense of collecting this information and transferring it to the IRS will be born by ALL Canadians in the form of increased banking costs (estimated at a trillion dollars worldwide). FATCA came into existence because the USA is the only country in the world (except for Eritrea) which clings to the hegemonic system of citizenship-based taxation rather than resident-based taxation. Again, thank you for recognizing that FATCA is wrong and lending your voice to the opposition.

I hope some other Brockers will take a minute to thank Ms. May too. I notice my comment stands alone right now. BTW, you do not need Twitter, Facebook, Disqus, etc. to comment there — name and e-mail address is sufficient.

  13. @ nobledreamer

Thanks, I was hoping someone else would send a thank you too. Your comment has an “up arrow” from me. It is a good one. I saw all the comments on the TPP backgrounder page and there was “Canada and FATCA” without any at all. It seemed a shame. All the tweets are a good idea too.

  14. @ All

Calgary411’s newly arrived Certificate for Leaving the Nightmare must have had an energy booster pack attached because she just presented Elizabeth May with more material on RDSPs on the backgrounder page. I think there is good reason to believe that the Green Party will gather this information and do whatever they can with it to help our ANTI-FATCA FATWA. I’ll try to keep an eye on Ms. May’s parliament page to see if she brings up FATCA in the new session. She might be waiting to see if/when Flaherty announces anything about an IGA.

  15. I’m working on sending the Green’s press release to as many of the community newspapers in her riding as I can.

  16. @ bubblebustin
Good plan. That press release is very well worded. According to Ms. May’s schedule she will be in Sidney Feb. 21, Vancouver Feb. 22 and Sidney Feb. 23.

  17. The Cuban exiles in the United States have been very effective keeping the embargo on Cuba in place.

Imagine thousands of pissed off former US citizens (American exiles) becoming politically active in the governments of the countries where they live and the implications of policy towards the US.

    Food for thought.

  18. At the Toronto forum a petition was signed by those attending which I believe Elizabeth May will be presenting to parliament sometime. I think this will be the place to watch for its appearance and I’ll try to remember to check it out now and then …

  19. It’s beginning to look like my gravatar should be green after all the comments I’ve put up on this thread but please Petros don’t change the purple to green, I like it as it is. πŸ˜‰
